Your powerful performance is helping create meaningful change.

We are incredibly grateful to Studio de Danse Danielle, the talented dancers, directors, choreographers, families and producers behind the powerful piece, “Once, They Were Kind”.

We had the opportunity to meet almost all of you and share more about the work of Harmony House and the realities facing women and children fleeing violence. It was so meaningful to see how your dance performance is helping bring awareness and support to our community.

Once, They Were Kind was named the 13 & Over People’s Choice winner at Candance Nationals, earning a $1,000 donation that the team generously chose to give to Harmony House Shelter.

To every dancer and everyone who helped bring this piece to life, thank you. Your winning performance tells a powerful story and leaves a lasting impact.🩵💜

Congratulations on this beautiful achievement, and thank you for choosing Harmony House and for using your platform to support women and children rebuilding their lives free from violence. 🫶🏼

As communities prepare to recognize Take Back the Night, we are starting a conversation that will continue throughout the fall and into the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. We are launching a new initiative: One Less Barrier. 🚪

Statistics show it can take a survivor an average of seven attempts to leave an abusive partner permanently.

Instead of asking, “Why didn’t she leave sooner?” we are creating space to ask:

What helped?
What would have helped?
What could have made the journey to safety easier?

Over the coming months, we will invite survivors and families to share insights that can help our community better understand the barriers women and children face and how we can work to remove them.

💜 One Less Barrier 🚪
Listening to lived experiences. Creating pathways to safety.

Thank you, Donna and Chris Hawks! 🩵💜

We are so grateful to Donna and Chris for taking the time to learn more about the work we do at Harmony House and how we support women and children rebuilding their lives free from violence.

Your generous $800 contribution helps us continue providing trauma-informed services and programs that support healing, build resilience, and help break the cycle of abuse.

We also can’t wait to hear more about your book! Thank you for everything you do for our community and for the generosity you continue to show. Your kindness and support truly make a difference.

What an incredible summer we’ve had at Harmony House! ☀️💜

As summer comes to a close, our children created this special piece of art to help us say thank you to the incredible community partners and donors who made so many wonderful experiences possible.

From delicious meals and creative activities to martial arts, aerial arts and exciting adventures, each opportunity gave our children the chance to have fun, build confidence, try something new and simply enjoy being kids.

A heartfelt thank you to Meal Prep Ottawa, Arts Animation City of Ottawa, Gracie Barra Ottawa, 3Sixty Aerial Arts and Escape Manor for being part of such a memorable summer.

This artwork carries a simple message from our children to you: thank you for making our summer so special. 💜☀️

With the recent tragic news of Kesi Fevrier, another woman whose life was taken in Ottawa, our hearts are with her family, friends, and all those grieving this devastating loss. 💜

Her friend Jessica Sloan described Kesi as “so strong and so confident, not only in the way that she speaks and leads, but in her body and physicality,” adding, “you just don’t expect it to happen.”

Gender-based violence continues to increase across Canada, and here in Ottawa, Kesi Fevrier follows the devastating losses of Olga Konokhova and Farnaz Farahani. Each life lost is one too many.

Newfoundland and Labrador recently declared gender-based violence an epidemic and established a task force bringing together survivors, Indigenous representatives, frontline service providers, and community partners to help shape solutions.

We hope this recognition leads to meaningful action across Canada.

Every woman deserves to be safe. No more lives lost to gender-based violence. 💜

Back-to-school excitement was in the air at Harmony House! 🎒✏️
A heartfelt thank you to the Na'amat Canada Ottawa School Supplies Project for generously providing backpacks and school supplies for our children. The joy on their faces was beautiful to see, and their moms were incredibly grateful.

These backpacks are more than school supplies—they help children start the year feeling prepared, included, and excited for what lies ahead.

Thank you to everyone who made this wonderful donation possible and for continuing to stand alongside the women and children at Harmony House. 💜

Today, CBC Ottawa highlighted an important reality: reports of sexual assault in Ottawa have increased by nearly 24% compared to this time last year. This story is a reminder that there is still much work to do. Prevention, education, survivor support, and access to safe housing are all essential to creating communities where women and children can live without fear.

At Harmony House Shelter, we see the impact behind these statistics every day. More women and children are seeking safety, healing, and the opportunity to rebuild their lives free from violence. Unfortunately, the need for safe transitional housing continues to grow beyond the space we currently have.

Every woman and child deserves a safe place to call home.

Together, we can create awareness, expand access to safe housing, and ensure families have the support they need to move forward.

Thank you to CBC Ottawa and reporter David Fraser for the opportunity to discuss the growing need for resources that support survivors of gender-based violence and help create safer communities.
