sometimes i feel defeated when my bath bombs don’t turn out. It’s actually super hard to make the perfect bath bomb! who would’ve thought?? they crack, they fall apart, they stick to the moulds, they are very hard to make when you are a perfectionist that’s for sure. One thing i’m very passionate about is zero waste (obviously) so all the bath bombs that don’t turn out i put them into a jar to be used as a powder for the bath instead of a bomb. unfortunately you can’t remold bath bombs so this is a simple alternative to my perfectly imperfect bath bombs!:)

We carefully watch what goes into our mouths and on our bodies—organic this, petroleum-free that. But when it comes to keeping a healthy home, knowing what to do isn't so easy. In fact, the average house may contain as many as 400 chemicals, some of them toxic, many untested, according to a 2009 study in the journal Environmental Science & Technology. The following simple swaps can help reduce your environmental footprint and even improve your overall health!

happy thanksgiving everyone!!

The season for holiday entertaining is fast approaching. While hosting any kind of gathering, it is easy to focus on convenience rather than on how much waste you are creating. Yet, every bit of trash generated will end up polluting the environment down the line. Waste and plastic pollution has become a global environmental crisis, threatening our waterways and oceans, wildlife, public health, and even our climate. By the year 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean, by weight, than fish. And the problem doesn’t stop there. Fossil fuel extraction - not consumer demand - is driving more plastic production, while also polluting our air and water, and contributing to the climate crisis. Plastic use also pollutes our bodies, exposing us to toxic chemicals that can have severe health impacts.
Even efforts to recycle plastic are still really just efforts to manage waste rather than reduce it. This has largely been unsuccessful with less than 8% of plastic actually being recycled. Most of it ends up in storm drains, waterways, landfills or incinerators. While the problem is big and complex, every small step towards zero waste is part of the solution.

Here are some simple tips to keep your household low waste during the holiday season:

skip disposable dinnerware!
make sure to compost and recycle!
BYO leftover containers!
skip the gift wrap or wrap in newspaper!
stay home!
shop local & from thrift stores!

I hope you all have a safe thanksgiving holiday, stay tuned for more products to be released soon!

Why go zero-waste and toxin-free with your laundry routine?

When it comes to cutting down on contributions to your landfill, food waste has definitely taken center stage, but there are other habits we keep in our home that contribute to landfills. Instead of trying to tackle them all at once, I think it’s best to shift the easier habits first. How you do laundry is one of those easier habits to shift.

Many conventional detergents and fabric softeners contain harmful chemicals that come in contact with both your skin when you wear your clean clothes as well as the environment when they are rinsed away. While there are quite a few chemical offenders in laundry detergent and fabric softener, I don’t want to overwhelm you. One of the most prevalent and dangerous ingredients is phthalates. These are in every single bottle of conventional detergent and fabric softener I’ve come across.

Phthalates are used to help prolong the “smell-life” of a fragrance because they help bind chemicals to fiber and skin. Phthalates are known endocrine disruptors. Men with higher phthalate compounds in their blood showed reduced s***m counts, according to a 2003 study conducted by researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Harvard School of Public Health. Another 2003 study cites how phthalate exposure in pregnant women can disrupt endocrine function and induce reproductive and developmental toxicity. What this boils down to is that phthalates disrupt our reproductive systems, which in turn disrupt our hormone levels. Although exposure to phthalates mainly occurs through inhalation, it can also happen through skin contact with scented detergents and softeners, which is a significant problem.

natural deodorant
$10.50
- my favourite zero waste swap i use in my morning routine
- Chemical-laden, traditional deodorants tend to clog pores and make it harder for your body to sweat the way it needs to. Organic deodorant still helps to prevent odor by keeping natural bacteria from mixing with the salt and water on the skin while allowing your body to sweat the way it should!
- Natural deodorants cover smell, not sweat — and that's a good thing. Don't expect the same results as traditional deodorants when switching to a natural product.
- simple ingredients that are better for you and our environment
- *contains beeswax*

shampoo & conditioner bar
$10
- It's no secret that the beauty industry takes a toll on the environment
- Shampoo bars are exactly what they sound like—no bottle, all bar!—and can last up to 80 washes, meaning they outlast two to three bottles of your favorite shampoo.
- simply lather it in your hands a bit and use it like a bar of soap on your hair!
- (this ones pretty cool)

whitening toothpaste:
$8.50
- coconut oil based toothpaste
- Coconut oil attacks the harmful bacteria in your mouth. It can reduce plaque buildup, prevent tooth decay and fight gum disease. For these reasons, oil pulling or brushing your teeth with coconut oil can significantly improve oral and dental health
- this one may take some getting use to but definitely worth not ingesting all those toxic toothpaste chemicals!

natural dry shampoo:
$8.50
- this magical dry shampoo powder comes in a salt & pepper shaker! simply sprinkle some on your hair, rub in and you are good to go!
- Aerosol propellants are harming and depleting our ozone layer. You know, the important layer that protects us from the sun's harmful UV rays, like a comforting layer of sunscreen?

natural all purpose spray:
$13.00
- most store-bought cleaning products are filled with toxic chemicals
- Many are also known to cause developmental and endocrine harm, not to mention the negative impact they have on our environment. These chemicals are only partly removed by wastewater treatment plants, don’t readily break down, are persistent in the environment and toxic to aquatic life.
- this simple and safe all purpose cleaner will do the trick, smell amazing and replace all those nasty chemicals

dish soap
$13.00
- several chemicals commonly found in conventional dish soaps harm the environment.
- After you rinse those suds off, and they begin their journey down your drain, they enter waterways where they harm aquatic life.
- For example,
1. methylchloroisothiazolinone is toxic to aquatic life and harms ecosystems,
2. sodium polyacrylate pollutes local water and poisons living being, and
3. chlorine is a well-known aquatic toxin.
- my dish soap is eco friendly and does not contain any harsh chemicals that could be ingested in your body!
- simplicity

linen spray
$13.50
- this all natural lavender linen spray can completely refresh a room. It can make any room, linen, and clothing smell great, and can even help lull you to sleep
- (one of my favourite products!)

100% wool dryer balls:
$15 for three (3)!
- eco friendly laundry alternative as wool is a natural renewable resource & biodegradable!
- lasts 2-4 years!!
- replaces hazardous chemicals and synthetically scented dryer sheets
- faster drying time
- save $$ & the environment! (& one of my favourite zero waste alternatives)
- suggested purchase with: dryer ball spray

dryer ball spray:
$5.50
will last you soo long!
- just spray each dryer ball once or twice before placing it in the dryer to freshen up the scent!
- no essential oil splotch stains

natural laundry soap:
$14.50
- did you know that the type of laundry detergent you use may be affecting your sleep? (hint hint- it’s all the toxic chemicals)
- All natural ingredients can help reduce the wear and tear on fibers, reduce color fading, and keep clothes looking newer, longer!
- eliminate those harmful chemicals in regular detergent & start feeling and sleeping better knowing that you are starting your zero waste journey & helping the environment!
- add in 1/4 cup for lighter loads & 1/2 for heavier

in wash scent booster and softener
$8.50
- everyone loves their laundry smelling good, simply add in 2 tablespoons to your load and you are good to go!
- Many detergents, softeners and scent boosters are filled with chemicals that leave a residue on the clothing. This residue can then by absorbed by our skin. Many of the chemicals are harsh, causing harm to our bodies and being an irritation to the skin.
- keeps laundry smelling fresh, soft and clean. It’s all natural, non-toxic and really boosts the scent in the laundry.

simplicity.

Zero Waste encompasses the principles of conserving resources, minimizing pollution, maximizing employment opportunities, and providing the greatest degree of economic self-reliance.

Adopting a Zero Waste approach to resource management is critical to the future of the planet. Here is why we need to change the entire system of how we make, use, and dispose of stuff.
Currently, our production system goes one way – from earth to dump.

1. We extract natural resources like trees, metals and fossil fuels
2. We manufacture them, often through polluting, toxic, and wasteful practices, into products that have a limited life
3. We distribute these products to communities, often shipping these products long distances for sale and then disposal
4. After we all buy and use these products, we toss them into a landfill or burn them in an incinerator, both of which destroy those resources. When we want or need new products, we just head back to the natural resources like they are in infinite supply.

we need to do and be better. join me on your zero waste journey!

Hi! I'm Kortney!
A zero waste living advocate.

I have recently graduated from the Institute of Technology Sligo, where I completed my Bachelor of Science in Environmental Protection. Prior to my time at ITSligo, Ireland, I spent two years at Georgian College where I graduated with an Environmental Technician Diploma.

I am extremely passionate about natural resource management and conservation. This passion enabled me to look at how I could do and be better regarding what I use in my day to day life.

So, welcome, to Orenda Empowerment, where I create zero waste products and encourage you to effect change within your life and start living more consciously.

"we don't need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly, we need millions of people doing it imperfectly" - Anne Marie Bonneau
