Greg Keller, School District 68 Trustee A voice of reason for Nanaimo-Ladysmith and District students and families.

I extend my deepest sympathies to the students, families, staff, and community of Tumbler Ridge. No one deserves this. School is supposed to be a safe haven for children to learn, grow, and reach their full potential. I am at a loss for words.

Shaping the Future of Education: Your Vote Matters!

The upcoming BC election is critical for the future of public education. No matter who forms the next government, we will work closely with them to ensure our schools remain safe, inclusive, and supportive for students and staff.

Here’s how the party platforms stack up:

• NDP: Committed to adding mental health counsellors in every school and education assistants in K-3 classrooms, they focus on mental wellness and addressing staff shortages. The NDP also prioritizes expanded childcare and streamlining teacher certification.

• Greens: Focus on rural education improvements, supporting safe learning spaces, and preparing schools for climate resilience. Their platform emphasizes the importance of sustainability and student well-being.

• Conservatives: Their platform emphasizes a “learning-first” approach, promising to restore academic rigor and reduce bureaucratic oversight. However, their push to scale back diversity programs and apparent shift away from inclusive education practices has sparked concern about impacts on student support and school culture.

As you head to the polls, vote for the party that will ensure our schools foster safety, inclusion, and success for every student. Let’s build a future where education works for everyone.

On the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we honour Indigenous communities and reflect on the harm caused by residential schools. This day urges us to acknowledge this painful legacy, listen to survivors, and commit to ongoing reconciliation. By embracing truth, respect, and Indigenous rights, we can work toward a more just, inclusive future for all.

Welcome Back, Students and Staff!

It’s that time of year again—fresh notebooks, sharpened pencils, and the unmistakable sound of zippers struggling to close on overstuffed backpacks. I want to officially welcome everyone back to another exciting school year!

Whether you’re a student who’s already misplaced their homework (don’t worry, we’ve all been there), or a staff member who’s perfected their coffee-to-energy ratio over the summer, we’re thrilled to have you back.

Here’s to a fantastic year ahead!
