Did you know the Anishinaabeg were guided on a great migration to the place where “food grows on water”? That place was the Great Lakes, where they found manoomin (wild rice)—the only grain native to North America.

Known as “the good berry,” manoomin is a sacred gift that has nourished Anishinaabe people for generations and remains an important part of their culture, ceremonies, and connection to the land.

💚 Protecting manoomin means protecting culture, tradition, and future generations.

Support and empower youth as they transition out of care into adulthood with culturally grounded programs and mentorship.

Provide one-on-one guidance, help youth set and achieve personal goals, navigate adult service systems (housing, education, mental health, life skills), and deliver community-based youth programming.

You bring: a Child & Youth Worker or Social Services Diploma; 2+ years of direct experience in a social service agency working with Indigenous children and families; knowledge of First Nation traditions and CYFSA legislation; and a valid Ontario Class 'G' license with vehicle access.

Staff Spotlight: Meet Jessica Atkinson-Maruso

Jessica is our Staff Trainer here at Mnaasged, the person behind our onboarding, workshops, and training resources. She takes complicated information and turns it into clear, practical learning that helps our staff feel prepared, supported, and confident in their roles.

Her favourite part of the job? Building new things from the ground up and making learning feel a little less overwhelming.

When she's not at work, you'll find Jessica out on a hiking trail, curled up with a good fiction book, or spending time with her family and fur babies. She's also a huge Marvel fan and will happily rewatch the movies more times than she'd like to admit! 🎬

Mnaasged’s Indigenous Knowledge Coordinator, Iokarenhtha, is currently attending the 13 moons Land Based Learning Q1 Summit, participating in impactful learning and traditional cultural practices.

During the first two days, participants engaged in hands-on traditions, including smoking rainbow trout and preparing clay for pottery and pipes.

Iokarenhtha also had the opportunity to learn from two incredible speakers:

Tracey Whiteye, who spoke on land-based healing and trauma-informed approaches nurtured through our relationships with land, culture, community, and traditional knowledge.

Wendy Hill, who shared powerful teachings on prophecies and our sacred responsibilities to the land, our community, and future generations, reminding us of what it means to live and work in right relationship with the natural world and one another.

We are grateful for these rich teachings, connections, and grounding experiences!

Oneida Community & Social Services invites community members to join us for a To***co Burning and Ground Breaking Ceremony as we mark the beginning of the new Youth Transitional Housing Development Project.
