No ladder? No problem! Three fellows taking teamwork to new heights at the old Brigden Railroad Station. Definitely not your average group portrait!

The Brigden Railroad Station was built in the late 19th century as part of the expansion of rail lines through Lambton County, connecting the rural community of Brigden to larger regional markets, it was named after engineer John Brigden in 1873. Need flour, nails, gossip, and the latest news? The rural Ontario general store of the 1800s had it all. This photo shows the old McCrae Store in Mooretown, the original one-stop shop.

The general store was the heart of the community, supplying everything from food staples and dry goods to tools, fabric, and mail services. These stores also served as social gathering places where news was shared, credit was extended, and local relationships were built. Often run by one family, the general store played a vital role in supporting everyday life in small settlements.

This 1911 Traveling Card belonged to a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and served as official proof of good standing while working away from home. Valid for a limited time, it allowed railway workers to travel between lodges, receive assistance, and be recognized by fellow members across the rail network.

Part ID, part membership card, and part lifeline, documents like this highlight the strong fraternal bonds that supported railway workers during the early 20th century—and the essential role these organizations played in life on the rails.
