Canada's Ecofiscal Commission

Canada's Ecofiscal Commission Canada's Ecofiscal Commission: practical fiscal solutions to spark the innovation for growing economic and environmental prosperity in Canada.

Canada’s Ecofiscal Commission was formed by a group of experienced, policy-minded economists from across the country, seeking to broaden the discussion of ecofiscal policy reform beyond the academic sphere and into the realm of practical policy application. The Ecofiscal Commission and its Commissioners are fully independent and aim to serve policy-makers across the political spectrum, at all leve

ls of government. We are supported by an Advisory Board with broad and diverse perspectives representing industry, the environment and the spectrum of political thought in Canada. Together, we aim to bring people together around the table to have the critical discussion about ecofiscal reform that Canada’s future requires. Our research focuses on practical policy solutions that can drive the innovative economy we need to succeed in the 21st century. Our reports will explore the greatest opportunities for pragmatic Canadian ecofiscal policies including: road-congestion pricing, municipal user fees, carbon pricing, subsidy reform, air-pollution pricing, water pollution pricing, water use pricing, catastrophic risk pricing, etc.

Our final blog, from Dale Beugin: I hope that policy researchers and analysts build on our work. Good policy can be smart, practical, and possible… if we’re willing to work for it.

This week, Canada’s Ecofiscal Commission released its final report. While we have a few loose ends to tie up in 2020, the report signals the end of our research mandate. Over the last five years, we’ve contributed to policy conversations across Canada about water, waste, traffic, risk, and clima...

What is the bottom line? To achieve our climate targets, we have several options from which to choose. Canadian governments should be smart about making this choice.

In the organization’s final report, Canada’s Ecofiscal Commission underlines carbon pricing is the lowest-cost option for meeting emissions targets.
