"If you, the chiefs of Asante, are going to behave like cowards and not fight, you should exchange your loincloths for my undergarments."

In 1900, the British Governor of the Gold Coast demanded the Golden Stool—the Sika Dwa Kofi—the sacred object believed to house the soul of the Asante nation. He wanted to sit on it.

Yaa Asantewaa, Queen Mother of Ejisu, a woman in her sixties, rose before the chiefs and delivered those words. Then she seized a gun, fired a shot, and led an army of 5,000 against the British Empire.

🔹 The first and only woman ever to command the Asante army
🔹 Laid siege to the British fort at Kumasi
🔹 Captured and exiled to the Seychelles, where she died in 1921

The Golden Stool was never surrendered. The Asante hid the real Stool and defended a decoy. The British never sat on it. It remains in Kumasi to this day.

Denied a commission. Answered with eleven degrees.

Born to a former slave in Kentucky, 1889. John Morton‑Finney enlisted in the US Army and joined the Buffalo Soldiers—the 24th Infantry Regiment. He rose to sergeant. But when the time came for an officer's commission, the door was closed. He was denied—not because he lacked competence, but because he was Black.

He took his discharge. Then he spent the next eighty‑five years proving the empire could not limit his mind.

🔹 Eleven academic degrees—five in law
🔹 Taught Greek, Latin, German, Spanish, and French for forty‑seven years at Crispus Attucks High School
🔹 Practiced law until age 106
🔹 The oldest practicing attorney in the United States
🔹 The last surviving Buffalo Soldier

He died at 108. The army that denied him a commission is a memory. His name is still spoken.
