This week, NCCM’s past CEO Mustafa Farooq and Advocacy Officer Ahmad Al Qadi testified in front of the Senate Human Rights Committee on Parliment Hill regarding Bill C-9, alongside other national Muslim groups.
The bill has been the subject of prolonged debate over attempts to better balance the legislation with civil liberties protections in Canada.
Specifically, alongside various positive aspects of Bill C-9, there is still a major concern with how the law bans symbols that “so nearly resemble” images or signs used by listed terrorist entities.
Many of these entities have hijacked mainstream Arabic or Islamic scripture or sayings for their own imagery, which deeply complicated the practical application of the Bill.
The Bill also includes an amendment that eliminates the long standing exemption of good faith religious discussions from hate speech charges.
We will continue to advocate for your civil liberties.
