What is a trustee? Why should that matter to me?

Trustees are elected representatives responsible for governing public, separate or francophone school boards in Alberta. Trustees matter because they ensure educational services meet community needs and comply with provincial legislation.

If you’re a parent or caregiver, trustees make decisions that directly impact your child and their education. As we approach the Municipal Election, take the time to review the trustee candidate platforms where you live. See who resonates with you. Ask yourself who would best fit as a strong decision-maker and advocate for your child, your school and your community.

Your voice matters, and your vote matters. Make it count this October.

What does a school board trustee NOT do:

1. Hire or fire employees; trustees have one employee; the superintendent of schools.

2. Trustees do not get involved in day-to-day operations of the school division. They are welcome to volunteer at the schools when it is convenient for the staff. Trustees do not teach students, perform maintenance on the schools or drive busses.

3. Trustees submit a capital plan for the division's requests for new schools and modernizations. The Alberta government decides on and funds construction (not trustees).

4. The board receives funding annually for maintaining structures of schools, including roof repair, flooring, etc. The government decided how much funding is required and what projects are approved.

What does a school board trustee do? These are a few of the responsibilities of a trustee.

1. Advocate on behalf of their students to all levels of government to improve educational experiences based on feedback from students, parents and other stakeholders.

2, Trustees set priorities for the division based on input from students, staff, parents and the community.

3. Trustees create policies that guide how the division operates and works toward achieving the district’s goals.

4. Trustees regularly review policies to ensure they are effective and continue to reflect the needs of students.

5. Trustees regularly review policies to ensure they are effective and continue to reflect the needs of students.

On October 20th, I would appreciate your votes for trustee of Northern Lights Public Schools. I was born here in LLB, and am a product of our excellent public school system. My 30 years of teaching here at Vera M. Welsh and at Kikino School give me a unique perspective to add to the board.
