Last weekend Chief Brad Owen and Deputy Chief Allie Lowdermilk attended the SAFC-Saskatchewan Association of Fire Chiefs Conference in Kindersley, meeting with Leadership from across the province.

Seminars they included Railway Safety & Management of a Dangerous Goods Derailment, Insurance Underwriting & How it Effects Saskatchewan Communities & Gire Departments, Mutual Aid Agreements, Fire Investigation & Case Study, How to Declare an Emergency and Creating an Evacuation Center, Upcoming Updates to 911 Emergency Apps and many seminars on Mental Health & First Responders.

A keynote speaker to mention was Todd Able - Incident Commander for the 2013 Yarnell Hill Wildfire that claimed the life of 19 members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots. (You may recognize this story from the movie Only The Brave). He uses his perspective as incident command to educate others on leadership, teamwork, and decision-making under extreme pressure as well as the after effects, both physically and mentally.

His presentation was raw and emotional for everyone in the room, as it resonated with many from leadership who make decisions that effect others during emergency situations, many decisions which have left lasting effects on those involved.

It was a great weekend of education, networking and sharing experience and knowledge!

Thank you SAFC and Kindersley Fire Department for hosting a great conference!

Today is International Firefighters’ Day, and while it may feel close on the heels of First Responders Day, it’s worth taking a moment to recognize something important.

Every firefighter here is a volunteer.

Behind every call is someone who just left their full-time job, stepped away from supper with their family, or got out of bed in the middle of the night. They show up carrying not just gear, but the skills and experiences from their everyday lives. Skills that make our department stronger, more capable, and deeply connected to the people we serve.

Because in a small community, it’s rarely “just a call.”
It’s your neighbour. Your coworker. Your friend.

There are moments of heartbreak and moments of relief. There are calls that stay with you long after the trucks are back in the bay. And behind it all are countless hours of training - done on evenings and weekends, on personal time, so that when the tone drops, we are ready to give our very best.

This isn’t just about courage in an emergency. It’s about commitment in the quiet moments no one sees.

Today, we don’t just say thank you we acknowledge the sacrifice, the dedication, and the reality of what it means to serve as a volunteer firefighter.

To our members, and to volunteer firefighters everywhere: your community is stronger because of you.

Kenaston Volunteer Fire Department has had a very busy 48 hrs.

At 10:05am KFD responded to a ditch fire South East of Kenaston. 7 members responded with all units to find a small ditch fire which had spread into a field of stubble.
The fire was quickly brought under control and all units back in service at 12:00pm

KFD responded to its second call off the day at 6:20pm to a Field/Brush Fire North of Kenaston in the RM of Lost River. 8 members responded with all units along with Hanley Rosedale Fire Department with 2 units.

Upon arrival members of Hanley Department were already on scene working the head of the fire. Unit E403J and our Fire Skid Unit quickly engaged in fighting the head of the fire on the opposite flank. Units E402J and T405J set up a water fill station on the road at the entrance to the field.

With wet field conditions navigating the terrain was difficult and both departments required rescue from tractors after becoming stuck. Tractors with disc's arrived to create a fire guard around multiple large sloughs that were fully involved.

The fire was deemed under control at 8:16pm, with Hanley Department being released from scene sometime there after, with KFD continued to work on extinguishing hot spots.

The scene was handed over to landownersto monitor overnight, trucks fueled and back in service at 12:40am.

Thank you to all members who put in the hours yesterday, as well as our mutual aid partners and community members who responded with equipment.

This is also a reminder to not wait to call 911 in the event of field or equipment fire. With extremely dry surface vegetation and always changing weather and wind conditions, a small fire can become out of control very quickly.
Our area as of today is now deemed Extreme Fire Risk Conditions by the SPSA.
