Behind-the-scenes look at our Proactive Leak Detection Program — a key strategy in addressing the ongoing issue of aging infrastructure. 🎧

Leaks can waste thousands of gallons of water without anyone noticing. Before launching the proactive program, Hamilton Water had a reactive leak detection where leaks were identified and repaired after receiving a call or complaint related to low water pressure, noise in pipes or a visual water leak.

Now with specialized acoustic equipment and highly trained staff, Hamilton Water can get ahead of pipe breaks and focus on repair, rehabilitation, and replacement before leaks become a big problem.

The program has also reduced risks to City infrastructure, including the pipe network. It prevents erosion of pipe bedding, which can lead to major pipe breaks and damage to the foundations of roads, bridges, buildings, and other structures.

Biodiversity starts in our backyards — and healthy watersheds are essential to protecting it. 🌎

Hamilton’s watersheds, wetlands, creeks and harbour support fish, birds, pollinators and countless other species that rely on clean water and healthy habitats to thrive. But after more than 100 years of industrialization and urban growth, many local waterways still face challenges from pollution, habitat loss and stormwater runoff.

That’s why the City’s Watershed Action Plan focuses on protecting and restoring biodiversity across Hamilton through actions like:

💧 Improving water quality in local creeks, marshes and Hamilton Harbour
🌱 Enhancing green infrastructure and sustainable stormwater management
🌳 Increasing urban tree canopy and protecting natural assets
🦆 Restoring and enhancing aquatic and wildlife habitat
🤝 Working with community partners to support long-term watershed health

Healthy watersheds help improve biodiversity, reduce flooding, support recreation and build more resilient communities for future generations.
