Pool season winding down? Before you drain your pool, think about where that water goes. 💧

Pool water with chlorine, salt or other chemicals should never go into a catch basin. These chemicals can harm fish and other aquatic life. With thousands of pools across Hamilton, disposing of pool water the right way can help protect Hamilton’s waterways.

Remember: catch basins are for rain and snowmelt — not pool water.

If you have a freshwater pool:

👉 Stop adding chlorine and other pool chemicals at least two weeks before draining.
👉 Make sure the water is fully dechlorinated before draining.
👉 Discharge it slowly onto your lawn so it can soak into the ground without causing flooding, erosion or runoff.
👉 Do not empty your pool on a rainy day.

Have a saltwater pool? You can drain it onto your property and allow it to soak into the ground, or carefully discharge it into the sanitary system through a connection on your property, such as a laundry tub.

Learn how to drain your pool safely at the link in our bio.
