Statement on Wildfire Season 🔥

Nova Scotia is entering a period of hot and dry weather, and I want to remind everyone that we all have a role to play in preventing wildfires.

So far this year, about 100 wildfires have been recorded across the province, including a significant fire near Mooseland Road in Halifax County that crews are working hard to manage. That is more than double the number we had at this time last year. While our crews are managing current wildfire activity, conditions are becoming drier, and the risk is increasing.

Most wildfires are caused by people, and that means many can be prevented. Please check the BurnSafe map every day, follow the restrictions in your area, and be careful when having a fire or disposing of ci******es.

During wildfire risk season, no domestic brush burning or campfires are allowed between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. Burn restrictions are updated daily, and when burning is not allowed, do not burn. The fine for not following the daily burn restrictions is $25,000. These rules are in place to protect people, communities and our natural resources.

If you see a wildfire or someone violating burn restrictions, please report it. By being cautious and making responsible choices, Nova Scotians can help reduce the risk of wildfires and keep communities safe.

Lunenburg District RCMP has arrested two men after shots were fired at a residence in Nineveh.

On July 12, at approximately 11:50 p.m., RCMP officers responded to a report that several shots had been fired into a home on Hwy. 208.

No one was injured.

As part of the investigation, officers identified a vehicle associated with the incident. While en route to the scene, they conducted a traffic stop and arrested the two men in the vehicle and seized a rifle.

Orland James Barrett, 68, of Hubley, has been charged with:
• Uttering Threats to Cause Death
• Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
• Using a Firearm in the Commission of an Offence
• Intentionally Discharging a Firearm While Being Reckless
• Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
• Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
• Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm in a Motor Vehicle
• Possession of a Weapon Obtained by Commission of an Offence

Investigators also determined that Barrett was involved in a similar shooting at the same residence on June 28. In relation to that incident, he’s been charged with:
• Intentionally Discharging a Firearm While Being Reckless
• Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
• Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm in a Motor Vehicle
• Possession of a Weapon Obtained by Commission of an Offence
• Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
• Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm

Barrett was released on conditions and is scheduled to appear in Bridgewater Provincial Court on August 19.

The second person, a 57-year-old man from Halifax, will be facing similar firearms-related charges in relation to the July 12 incident. He was released on conditions and is due in court on September 9.

The investigation, led by the Lunenburg District RCMP General Investigation Section with support from RCMP Forensic Identification Services, remains ongoing.

Via Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Nova Scotia

RCMP Halifax Regional Detachment (HRD) is seeking information on the whereabouts of Robert MacDonald, currently wanted on a province-wide arrest warrant.

MacDonald, 51, of Halifax, is facing charges of:
• Failing to Comply with an Undertaking
• Failing to Comply with a Release Order

MacDonald is described as 5-foot-7, 150 pounds. He has brown hair and a greying beard.

Police have made several attempts to locate MacDonald and are requesting assistance from the public.

Police investigate stabbing

Police are investigating a stabbing that occurred yesterday in Halifax.

At approximately 6:40 p.m., police responded to a report that a man had been stabbed in the 5600 block of Spring Garden Road. Officers located a 50-year-old man suffering from a stab wound. Officers provided first aid until he was transported to the hospital by EHS with what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.

Through the course of the investigation, a suspect was identified by investigators. Today, at approximately 9:45 a.m., a 30-year-old suspect was arrested without incident.

The investigation is ongoing.

Due to the rapidly changing conditions of the Mooseland Road wildfire, an evacuation order has been issued by public safety officials for 4315 Mooseland Road to Highway 7.

If you are in the affected area, evacuate immediately. Follow designated evacuation routes and the direction of emergency personnel. Do not delay.

Please do not travel into the area unless you are evacuating or directed to do so. Keep roadways clear for emergency responders.

Antigonish County District RCMP is asking for the public’s assistance in locating 47-year-old Michael James Blondeau. He was last seen on June 28 in Lower South River.

Blondeau is described as 5-foot-7, 165 pounds. He has brown hair and hazel eyes. He was last seen wearing jeans, a black Cummins hat, and a green and black plaid jacket
