West Hants RCMP investigating assault that occurred near Lakelands

West Hants RCMP is investigating an incident where a woman was assaulted by an unknown man.

On September 4 at approximately 1:30 a.m., West Hants RCMP responded to a report of an assault near Lakelands.

Officers learned a woman was driving on Hwy. 1. As she was near the intersection with Coles Rd., she was flagged down by a man standing near a car that was pulled over with its four-way flashers on.

When the woman stopped her vehicle and got out to assist the man, he shoved her to the ground.

The victim was able to defend herself, return to her vehicle, and drive away. She did not report physical injuries.

The man’s car is described as a dark small sedan or coupe, possibly a Honda Civic or similar vehicle.

The man is described as in his 40s, white, and approximately 5-foot-8, with dark facial hair. He was wearing all black clothes.

Investigators are appealing to anyone who may have seen a vehicle or a person matching the descriptions. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact West Hants RCMP at 902-798-2207. To remain anonymous, call Nova Scotia Crime Stoppers, toll-free, at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), submit a secure web tip at www.crimestoppers.ns.ca, or use the P3 Tips app.

At this time, RCMP in Nova Scotia have not received other reports of similar incidents. If anyone sees similar behaviour and does not feel safe to stop, contact police for follow-up. Call 911 in an emergency.

Bank of Canada unveils new vertical $20 bank note

The Bank of Canada has unveiled a new vertical $20 banknote featuring King Charles III.

According to a news release from the national bank, King Charles's "advocacy of sustainable action and his commitment to the environment are reflected in the many botanical elements on the note," which features a portrait of Canada's head of state in keeping with tradition.

Canada’s 13 provinces and territories are represented on the note with their respective “floral emblems,” along with several culturally significant flowers among the country’s Indigenous population, including wild strawberries, western red cedar, braided sweetgrass, and arctic cotton.

The notes also reference the country’s “natural heritage” and “Canadian ingenuity,” Governor General Louise Arbour said in a statement Thursday.

Along with the King, there are quotes from artists recognizing Canada's bilingualism, as well as celebrations of social advancements and scientific discoveries that have "helped define our place in the world."

Back to school safety: Police remind motorists to drive with caution

With the start of the new school year, police ask that you do your part to keep streets safe for students as they head back to the classroom this week.

Students will be returning to school this week, and many will be busing, walking and riding their bikes to get there. With more people and vehicles on our roadways, motorists are asked to drive with caution and allow for additional time when travelling before, during and after school.

Keep in mind that the speed limit in school zones is reduced to 30 km/h in areas where the approaching limit is 50 km/h, when children are present. Where the approaching speed limit is higher than 50 km/h, drivers are required to reduce speed to a maximum of 50 km/h when children are present. By reducing your speed, you’ll have more time to react to the unexpected and avoid an incident. Slower is safer, as children are sometimes distracted and do not always notice oncoming traffic.

Remember that passing school buses in either direction when the red lights are flashing, regardless of the number of lanes of traffic, not only puts people in danger, but is illegal and carries substantial fines. Motorists must also slow down approaching a school bus with flashing amber lights and prepare to stop.

Please avoid shortcutting in and around school areas if possible. Obey posted signs as well as crossing guards’ directions, watch out for children crossing the street and remember that crosswalks are not always marked. Essentially, every intersection is a crosswalk, whether marked or unmarked.

Our officers will be paying extra attention in school zones throughout the month of September to educate motorists, enforce motor vehicle regulations and ensure a safe start to the school year.

On September 2, 1998, the flight went down in the Atlantic Ocean near the entrance to St. Margaret’s Bay, claiming the lives of all 229 people on board.

Today, we honor the deceased, the families who will always be affected, and the innumerable first responders and members of the community who banded together in the wake of the incident.

Students across Nova Scotia are getting ready to return to classrooms for the 2026-27 school year, with new opportunities to learn, grow and succeed.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming Nova Scotia’s students and our dedicated teachers, principals and support staff back to school this September,” said Brendan Maguire, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development. “This is an exciting year as our government has expanded the Nova Scotia School Lunch Program to all grade levels, so every student has the option of a healthy, affordable lunch to fuel their day.”

This year, students and families will see several important changes and investments.

The Nova Scotia School Lunch Program is expanding again this school year to include all high schools across the province. This expansion means more students will have access to nutritious, affordable meals during the school day.

The program has continued to grow since its launch, providing students with healthy meals while helping families with the cost of groceries.

A new English language arts curriculum for grades 3 to 6 is rolling out this September. It builds on the strong literacy foundation students develop from primary to Grade 2.

The curriculum places a strong focus on foundational skills and reflects research on the science of reading. It aligns with a structured literacy approach, providing students with clear, direct instruction on how to read and write.

New curriculum resources will support teachers as they implement the updated learning expectations in classrooms this fall.

As students return to school, families are encouraged to connect with their local school or regional centre for education, or Conseil scolaire acadien provincial for information about school schedules, transportation and other back-to-school details.
