Today, June 11th, Nova Scotia marks Davis Day. Honouring William Davis, who was shot and killed by company police during a strike against the British Empire Steel Corporation in 1925.

Davis' death became a symbol for the struggle of workers across Nova Scotia and beyond for safer workplaces, fair treatment, and dignity on the job. Nova Scotia's New Democrats will continue to advocate for better and safer working conditions for all Nova Scotians.

This week's newsletter: Honouring Davis Day and Workers' rights

June 11th is recognized in Nova Scotia as Davis Day, to honour William Davis, a coal miner from New Waterford, Nova Scotia, who was shot and killed 101 years ago. Davies joined fellow miners in standing up to the British Empire Steel Corporation (BESCO), a powerful coal-mining company in Cape Breton...

Fetal Alcohol Nova Scotia (FANS) has been a dedicated advocate for those living with FASD in Nova Scotia. Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. FASD is a lifelong brain-based disability caused by prenatal alcohol exposure. It affects memory, learning, impulse control, and daily functioning.

In Nova Scotia, FASD is not formally recognized as a distinct disability within provincial policy. Caregivers for those with FASD are often left to navigate health, education, justice, and community services on their own. Individuals with FASD are often misunderstood because many of our systems are not FASD-informed.
I will continue to advocate for a better healthcare and support system for those living with FASD in our province.

The Turret is an important part of Halifax’s q***r history, and we are so excited to see The Turret Club (1976-1982) represented in Canada Post’s Place of Pride 2026 stamp issue. This spring, I advocated in a member statement for greater support for the work being done to preserve and restore The Turret’s original location at 1588 Barrington Street.

This weeks newsletter: World Oceans Day and the Coastal Protection Act

June 8th is World Oceans Day, designed to highlight the importance of the world's oceans and advocate for their protection. For Nova Scotians, being by the ocean is more than a scenic view; it is our way of life. We are home to one of the longest coastlines in the world, which has fed our communitie...

This spring, I had the honour of recognizing Daniel (Dan) MacKay in the legislature. Dan has been at the heart of Halifax’s 2SLGBTQIA+ community for years. In 1981, he moved to Halifax, and after graduating from King’s College, he became involved in the city’s gay culture, including helping to build the interior of Rumours on Granville Street in 1983. In the late 1980s, he would take over publishing of the GAEZETTE, the publication for the Gay Alliance for Equality, which would be renamed Wayves Magazine. Combined, the papers have had a 25-year run as a printed magazine and was rebooted as a virtual magazine by Daniel in 2023, in response to rising hate and authoritarianism. He has been involved in 2SLGBTQIA+ organizations such as Halifax Pride and the Elderberries. He also created the Halifax Rainbow Encyclopedia.

Thank you Dan for all you have done for our community!

Happy Pride Season Nova Scotia! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ We celebrate Pride to recognize the generations of community members and activists who fought for a Province and a Country that was more accepting and inclusive for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. It is also a time to recognize the work that still needs to be done. In the face of rising hate towards the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, it is important for us to continue to advocate for and openly support the rights of q***r and trans people. Everyone deserves a place where they can be themselves and thrive.

This month, many communities across Nova Scotia will be celebrating their local pride, including West Hans Pride, Valley Pride, and Truro Pride. Local Prides are an amazing opportunity to support the 2SLGBTQIA+ community across Nova Scotia.
