A message from Chief Letander:

As we get close to Spring (hooray!) I couldn’t help but look back on our Winterfest last month in Dauphin River First Nation. ❄️🔥

From February 26 to March 1, our community came together in the best way possible — families, friends, and visitors from neighbouring Nations all sharing in laughter, connection, and celebration. For a few days, we set aside the pressures of politics and the challenges of the world, and focused on what truly matters: each other.

We shared meals, enjoyed warm breakfasts and feasts, and filled our days with activities for all ages. From the excitement of the hockey tournament and poker derby, to the fun of bingo and the creativity of Magic Mountain — where everyone from youth to Elders searched for hidden golf balls in the snow — there was something for everyone. But what really struck me was the laughter ringing out in the community. It’s exactly what we all needed!

Our traditional skills and friendly competition were on full display with the tea boiling contest and nail driving competition, bringing out both determination and plenty of laughs (and no injuries, thank goodness!).

Seeing our people participating, smiling, and supporting one another is what community is all about. These are the moments that strengthen us.

Miigwetch to everyone who helped organize, participated, and made Winterfest 2026 such a success. Dauphin River is strong because of you!

Our hearts are with all those affected by the devastating wildfires currently affecting many parts of Manitoba. With more than 17,000 people evacuated and multiple communities under states of emergency, we stand in solitary with our relatives and neighbours during this difficult time.

We especially want to extend a support to evacuees from Northern First Nations who have been forced to leave their homes. Our community is here for you, and we are committed to helping however we can.

An important reminder: the Manitoba Wildfire Service has issued strict fire and travel restrictions across the province. Many areas are under fire or burn bans, meaning no open fires or campfires are allowed, even in approved fire pits.

Please respect these rules to protect our lands, our people and the brave firefighters working entirely to keep everyone safe. Let’s all do our part to prevent further tragedy. Stay safe, stay informed and support one another.

Many aspects of life are represented by the number four on the medicine wheel, including the four directions and the four seasons. East and spring are represented by the yellow in the wheel, and mark the place and time where all new beginnings are found. As we look to the east from our community, we see the rising sun showing us a new day, and the chance of something new and good in our lives.

What new beginnings are you looking forward to?

For some of us, it’s hard to reach out for the mental health supports and services we need. It can be even harder if we have to travel for care or leave our homes to seek treatment.

We know there is a need for these services in our community. While we are working to make that a reality, don’t forget to visit Strong Ones to find some help for you or a family member.
