Alyssa Greene Ward 1 Councillor Tantramar

Alyssa Greene Ward 1 Councillor Tantramar To begin my campaign I'd like to offer a small town style introduction. I grew up in Sackville or more specifically on Carters Turn in Frosty Hollow.

I'm the daughter of Terry and Gretchen Greene. I graduated from TRHS too many years ago to mention. After completing my secondary education I travelled and worked throughout Canada and Australia as a Chef and Medic in restaurants, hotels and mineral exploration camps in the Canadian Arctic before returning home about 20 years ago to buy a home in Dorchester. I now work for Canada Post and enjoy be

ing the embarrassing Aunt to 5 nephews and a niece who've all grown up here in Tantramar. My motivation for running for council is simple. I want to ensure that we have informed decision making and transparency in Town Hall to ensure that we have a healthy growing community for generations to come. As a Councillor I would commit to:
- asking questions and insist on being informed before voting on any issue
- ensure that we break free from the oppression of transparency in town hall.
- offer advocacy to preserve and grow services in our small community. Most immediately the renewed "Save our School" Campaign.
- minimize the growing tax burden by ensuring responsible fiscal decisions are made at town hall.
- promote accessibility in all areas of Tantramar. In the coming days I will have a page set up for my campaign and I hope to hear from the residents of Ward 1 so that I can ensure that I fully understand the needs of our community. I can promise that supporting me at the polls on May 11th will guarantee a voice for Dorchester on council.

“It was great to find out that there's an organization like Ability New Brunswick that would step in and help us.” – Wayne Ward, president of the Sackville Rod and Gun Club.

Rod and Gun Club: Mobility shouldn’t be a barrier to sports

The Sackville Rod and Gun Club has seen its membership grow dramatically in the last decade but despite its success, president Wayne Ward saw a gap when it came to being accessible.

For Wayne, the need to improve accessibility crystallized when he noticed a senior, who has since passed away, sitting in his car watching the shooting.

“At that point he was using a walker and it was tough for him to get out and do the sports that he loved,” says Wayne, adding that’s when he decided the club needed to invest in accessibility.

Wayne enlisted the help of Ability New Brunswick to develop a plan for the club using its free Accessible NB service. Accessible NB reviews provide specific recommendations for new design, modifications or adaptations to improve accessibility.

Before its review, the club had taken steps to improve accessibility by adding parking that was closer to its facilities and building an accessible ramp to its warming shelter.

But Wayne knew more could be done.

The review suggested improving signage, lighting, and lowering shooting benches on its gun and archery ranges so they are at the right height for people using wheelchairs and walkers.

Critically, the club also needs to build an accessible outhouse and put down compacted crusher dust to create wheelchair-friendly paths.

The club, which grew from 70 to 450 members in a 10-year-period, has begun fundraising to proceed with the recommended changes.

Wayne says Ability NB was a key partner in helping the club find the right solutions to the accessibility challenges it faced.

“It was great to find out that there's an organization like Ability New Brunswick that would step in and help us,” he says. “It’s hugely helpful. Ability NB does a great job.”
