On this day 105 years ago, the Nova Scotia Home for Colored Children was opened in the Preston Township. Government officials, dignitaries, and over 3,000 people came to the opening.

Today, the Home has been refurbished, renamed Kinney Place, and houses local Black-led, Black-focused, and Black-serving businesses and organizations, as part of Akoma Holdings plans to steward the land for the economic prosperity of the community.

While government and corporate support play a significant role in Akoma's growth, individual donors also play an important role in the delivery of programs and services. This spring, a gift from the Alice Barber Fund — a private donor advised fund — helped make that possible.

"Farming and agriculture are an important part of African Nova Scotian history and the history of this property. We wanted to provide a small contribution to help purchase the tools and equipment needed to support the community gardeners and encourage food security and community engagement."

Thank you to the Alice Barber Fund for making a gift to Akoma Holdings. You can make a gift through your own donor advised fund, or gift of securities today online at https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/akoma/

Well, short video presentation night (still get a snack!) Four teens from our winter youth program, focusing on learning the skill of writing, filming, and producing videos, made this for Akoma!

A round of applause for our fabulous video makers:
Corvae Clayton
Jemma Bowers
Carlos McKinnion
Kimora Cain

and the Government of Nova Scotia (Youth Development Initiative Grant)

Each day we celebrate our child and youth care workers at the Akoma Family Centre. The world celebrates those who work in this sector in May during International Child and Youth Care Week, May 4-10. Working in child and youth care is hard but rewarding work. Our staff are empathetic supporters, helpers, and advocates for those in our care.
