Did you know that June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day?

Established in 2006, this annual day raises awareness about elder abuse and neglect while promoting services and resources that support the safety, dignity, and well-being of older adults.

Unfortunately elder abuse continues to be a growing concern. That is why it is so important to learn how to recognize the signs of abuse, know where to report concerns, and understand ways to protect ourselves and others, including through advanced incapacity planning.

On June 15, people around the world wear purple to raise awareness and to recognize that abuse and neglect of older adults is both a public health and human rights issue. Communities host educational events to increase understanding of this important topic and to celebrate seniors as valued members of society who contribute a wealth of knowledge, skills, experience, and wisdom.

To learn more, visit the BC Association of Community Response Networks at bccrns.ca.

Together, we can help prevent elder abuse and neglect and create safer, more supportive communities for all older adults. 💜

The 19th BC Polish Festival, hosted by the Polonez Tri-City Polish Association on May 31, was fantastic!

The food, dancing, music, vendors, and festive atmosphere brought Port Coquitlam’s downtown core to life and created a wonderful celebration of Polish culture and community. It was great to see so many people out enjoying the festivities, and I’m really glad I attended.

And, completely by chance, I showed up dressed like the Polish flag! 🇵🇱

I just left Edmonton after attending the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) annual conference, where 2800+ delegates from across Canada came together to share ideas, tackle challenges, and build solutions.

Through workshops, plenary sessions, study tours, networking events, and debates on national resolutions, there were countless opportunities for insightful dialogue, meaningful connections, and learning from communities facing many of the same issues.

The pressures on Canadian municipalities are complex - from housing and infrastructure to public safety and community well-being. Local governments are on the front lines, but lasting solutions require strong partnerships with all orders of government.

One message resonated throughout the conference: Canada is strongest when our communities are strong. Federal-municipal collaboration is essential to building the housing, infrastructure, and safe, vibrant communities Canadians deserve. 🇨🇦

I’m grateful for the opportunity to attend the incredibly well-run convention and to bring new ideas, valuable connections and fresh perspectives back home.

A little levity during this morning’s Resolutions Plenary at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities convention.

After delegates debated a resolution calling on the federal government to address excessively bright vehicle headlights and it was time to vote, the room filled with Manfred Mann’s “Blinded by the Light”. 🎶😎

Later, when a resolution supporting small businesses came to the floor, the sponsor requested BTO’s “Taking Care of Business”. 😁

It’s not often that policy discussions come with a soundtrack, but these musical interludes definitely kept things entertaining! 🎵🏛️

Coquitlam’s diligent water-quality monitoring and maintenance program continues to deliver clean drinking water that exceeds provincial and federal health and safety standards. And it tastes great too! 🚰💦💧

We gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Province of British Columbia through the Ministry of Housing and Municipal Affairs.
