The Growling Beaver

The Growling Beaver The Growling Beaver Brevet is a new event in 2015 to celebrate cycling and to help people with Parkinson's to live well today.

All fundraising proceeds will go to support the joint work of the Davis Phinney Foundation and ParkinGo Wellness Society. The Growling Beaver Brevet is a social (non-race) ride to celebrate cycling with 150 cyclists riding 40, 100 or 200 km routes through the scenic Beaver Valley at what should be the height of the fall colours. The day will feature Beaver Valley and Georgian Bay communities and m

erchants that have supported cyclists through the summer season. The routes have been conceived with a mix of tarmac and scenic country gravel roads. Every rider will carry a “passport” that will be authenticated at checkpoints. Ride Highlights:

- Epic 40/100/200 km courses that cover scenic rail trails, gravel roads, and paved roadways
Stunning vistas overlooking the beautiful Beaver Valley and the surrounding region at the peak of fall colour

- An intimate event limited to 150 riders
"Passport” authentication at checkpoints which will spoil you with local cuisine and entertainment
Post ride meal upon your return to Side Launch Brewing Company

- Evening social, entertainment, and awards ceremony

- Receive a Growling Beaver swag bag

Through the amazing support of our sponsors, registration fees have been kept to a minimum and 100% of fundraising dollars will go to Davis Phinney Foundation and ParkinGo Wellness Society. Given this, the suggested fundraising minimum is $500 per participant. Note: The event will occur on open roads ways, thus all participants must follow the Highway Traffic Act.

Wednesday is the day, and we invite you to seize it. We are happy to announce that a plan to ride in Collingwood is taking shape for October 2, 2021 at Side Launch Brewery. While public health details will ultimately determine the schedule, our plan is to offer as near as possible an experience to the routes, the energy, and the collective impact on Parkinson’s that you are accustomed to. As you know… registration moves quickly. Sign up as soon as possible to guarantee your spot.

Registration will open Wednesday, June 30 at 10:00 am, at growlingbeaver.ca.

We’re excited to share that the Growling Beaver website has moved over to Parkinson Canada’s fundraising platform. We’ve just launched a new, integrated experience. One website with all the event details and one login to sign up, fundraise, and track your progress.

Here’s what you can expect:

• New email and personal fundraising page templates to make the process easy.
• An option for virtual riders who can’t join us in Collingwood on ride weekend.
• For virtual riders: distance tracking through integrations with Strava and other common apps
• Badges to track your completion of fundraising and distance goals and other important fundraising progress
• An interactive donor wall for your supporters to share a message
• Automatic tax receipting for you and your donors

Most importantly, expect a partnership focused on making sure that your support directly impacts Canadians living with Parkinson’s. In 2020, your fundraising helped provide the seed funding for a new app (launching soon) focused on helping people manage their symptoms and for the year ahead we’ll be funding new projects that support our shared ethos: helping people with Parkinson’s live well today.

Seasons Greetings to the GBB Community from Evan:

I have had an introspective fall since the Growling Beaver. Undertrained heading into this year’s ride, I managed to aggravate an underlying condition. I am now recovering from surgery to repair a spinal compression that left me quite lame over the past several weeks. Time I should have spent riding was spent reading and thinking.

While awaiting surgery, I also learned that a friend and member of the GBB community, John Offutt, died suddenly in a cycling accident, a tragic reminder of life’s fragility. Our thoughts are with his family this holiday season. Miraculously, another GBB friend. John Ruffolo, is back on his bike trainer. A wonderfully generous fixture with Les Domestiques cycling club, John escaped death and paralysis following a summer accident. There will be champagne along the Champs d’Elysées when John swings a leg over for his first outdoor ride in 2021.

I was preoccupied with these two accidents as I read Michael J Fox’s latest book, No Time Like the Future. In it, he confronts a collision between his outward optimism and an increasing personal melancholy. It made me think of the stark difference between the Evan I offer to you during the Growling Beaver and the near constant, lingering fear that I have about the future. Parkinson’s is like the incessant ticking of a clock in your head: you can’t escape the weight of time.

But as Mike Fox says, it’s “the gift that keeps taking.” Through his eponymous foundation, Fox has become the magnetic North for a cure. And while our $2 million in fundraising is dwarfed by his staggering C$845 million, I am no less grateful than he is for the gift of my condition. Along with Davis Phinney as well, we have accepted our fears and judoed them into something good. We all hold both fear and optimism in our minds simultaneously.

Some things just bring out the best in us. The Growling Beaver holds that magic. Happily, as a result of our relationship with Parkinson Canada, the GBB will benefit from the sustained energy of their support. We also remain devoted supporters of the Davis Phinney Foundation for US supporters.

It has been a long year for all of us, yet the holiday season also has a way of inspiring goodness. The spirit of the season, our landscapes washed in the white of snow, and the natural warmth of family and friends combine in a welcome sense of peace and goodwill. I hope you all feel that, along with my immeasurable gratitude for being part of our GBB circle of kindness and generosity

On behalf of all of my dear friends on the Organizing Committee, I wish you all a peaceful and healthy holiday season.

Evan
