Happy Father’s Day to all the dads, stepdads, grandfathers, and father figures in our community—and a special shout-out to the incredible fathers who serve right here! 🚒❤️

Being a volunteer firefighter requires a unique kind of dedication, but being a firefighting dad? That comes with a whole different level of sacrifice.

Behind every pager beep, there is a family moment put on hold. These men regularly step away from the dinner table, leave warm beds in the middle of the night, and miss birthday parties, school plays, or quiet weekends at home. When the alarm sounds, they answer the call to protect your family, often having to leave their own behind at a moment's notice.

To the wives, partners, and children who patiently wait for their safe return: Thank you. You share your fathers with our community, and we are profoundly grateful for your sacrifice, too.

The bond between fatherhood and the fire service runs incredibly deep here. In fact, over 60% of our male members are either fathers themselves or followed directly in their own fathers' footsteps into the volunteer fire service.

That statistic isn’t a coincidence—it’s an influence. Growing up with a father in the fire service means learning the true value of selflessness, and community spirit before you're even old enough to put on a helmet.

Did you know that a local fire department has created their own application for use in the field?

The Enhanced Response Estimator (ERE) https://ere.lantzfire.ca/ was built to provide critical, actionable info for Nova Scotia fire departments preplanning for incidents. It helps answer the vital questions when every second counts:

When an incident or hypothetical incident address is typed, the app provides:

Whose coverage area is it?
Where is the closest backup? (including substations)
How long will it take them to respond? (even factoring in live traffic)

🔥 TRAINING NIGHT: MAKING IT COUNT 🔥

Last night marked our final formal training session before the summer break, and we absolutely made it count! 🧑‍🚒💪

To ensure we are always ready when that alarm sounds, our members who perform interior fire attacks must pass a rigorous series of annual tests to prove they are fit for duty. Last night, we put those skills to the test in a real-world scenario.

🏠 The Scenario
We want to extend a massive thank you to one of our own members for graciously allowing us to use their vacant dwelling as a training ground. Having access to a real structure provides invaluable, realistic experience that you just can't get in a classroom.

💨 Note: The heavy smoke you see in the video isn't from a live fire! It's generated by an industrial smoke machine to safely replicate the exact, zero-visibility conditions our crews face during a real structural fire.

🔄 Dual Evolutions in Action
Our team ran two simultaneous operations during the drill:

Upstairs Crew: Ascended the stairwell, carefully simulating and checking structural integrity, before conducting primary and secondary search patterns.

Downstairs Crew: Advanced a charged hose line deep into the structure to tackle a mock "room and contents" fire in the rear, practicing various critical hose stream patterns.

🚒 Next Generation of Firefighters
This was also a fantastic opportunity for our junior members! We make it a priority to ensure our juniors are never left out of a training scenario. They jumped right into the action, gaining hands-on experience alongside our veteran members.

The Colchester Regional Emergency Management Organization will be at the Onslow Belmont Firehall on Wednesday, June 24th at 6:30pm.

We will discuss the importance of knowing the risks in your community and how to be prepared for 72-hours if an emergency did occur.

Colchester REMO will also have FireSmart Canada information available to show you how to make your property more resilient to wildfires.

🎬 Hollywood vs. Reality: What an Interior Fire Attack Actually Looks Like 🔥

If you watch movies or TV shows, an interior structure fire looks like a dramatic, well-lit stage. Actors run through rooms with clear visibility, easily spotting doorways, furniture, and victims while a few perfectly placed flames dance in the background.

The Reality
Almost pitch-black darkness. Modern fires burn synthetic materials (like plastics and polyurethane foam found in everyday furniture), which creates thick, toxic, ink-black smoke. Plus, when water is sprayed on incredibly hot materials, it creates a tremendous amount of steam.

You literally cannot see your own hand directly in front of your facepiece. We don't walk around; we crawl on our hands and knees, feeling our way along walls, managing the hose line, and navigating purely by touch and sound.

Because we have limited visibility, we rely heavily on technology. Our thermal imaging camera (TIC) reads heat signatures to show us the layout of the room, the hottest parts of the fire, and—most importantly—helps us locate possible victims inside the blackout conditions.
