Hey Canmore folks,
Have your say and help this wonderful community project Canmore Young Adult Network - CYAN to find out the needs of youth and young adults and help them to connect with each other and resources in Canmore. The survey is in the link below!
Thanks 😍

This survey is part of the Canmore Young Adult Network’s (CYAN) project aimed at Canmore youth and young adults, ages 15-35. Its purpose is to figure out what needs exists and guide the development of resources and programs to meet those needs. It also has an additional section for parents/guardians...

"Getting the tree and putting the tree up was important when I was growing up as a kid and that was always trudging through the snow to get the tree. Going to get the tree at Christmas when the snow was up to your waist was probably the best part of growing up in Canmore. And skating. Skating was always the big centre of Canmore community."

"It has been long time (over 3 years) waiting for them to come over. It has been personally stressful experience, but everything is alright now.
This is the best Christmas gift for me.
There will be a lot of adjustments, financially, etc. But it all can be done. They are here and I'm happy.
My selling points to my daughters are that I know that they are bright, they are wise and intelligent and this land will provide them an opportunity to better themselves, to realize their dreams. Whatever the dreams are. You can become what you want to be here and I think thats one of the important things for me. Thats the kind of legacy you can easily give to anyone. The future."

My best memory of Christmas is when I was about 8, I was with all my family in England at one of my aunt's house. The whole family was there, so there was lots of connectivity. Lots of time for everybody to be together and that was best Christmas ever. I don't remember what presents I received or anything like that. I just remember that we were all together. I remember spending time, playing with my brother. We just played the same game over and over. I would say that was the best gift. That connectivity, everyone being together.
The connectivity at Christmas is really powerful. It has been said that the su***de rates are lower at Christmas. People think that they are higher because Christmas it is a hard time for people, but because there is connectivity and everyone is together, it gives people things to look forward to so they don't typically take their lives at Christmas time.
Sadly the su***de rate is higher in a New Year when that connectivity is done.

Man in the left.

"You know one of the wonderful things about Remembrance Day and being here in Banff for the last 15 years is having members from the Siksika community come out here and march in the Remembrance Da Parade.
As we get a chance to hear some of the stories of First Nations people who were serving for Canada in the First and the Second World War, during that period they didn't have a right to vote and still they served. They often didn't get the benefits of the other veterans and still they served for our country. So we have a chance to learn what that spirit is that allows people to be so willing to give up their lives for our country, even if they don't have the right to vote.
I think we are only coming to learn and appreciate that. There are a lot of people here in this Valley really interested in those stories. Those are really significant thoughts that, you dedicate your life to the country even though the country wouldn't open its doors to you."

"I make from 30 to 40 thousand balloons a year. It takes less than 30 seconds and I get the kids to count out loud.
I always say never under estimate the power you have every second of the day to make the difference in someone else's life by just giving from your heart. There is nothing to do with money. I can give balloon at any giving time. I carry thousands with me.
I try to teach people how to give from the heart by making the balloon for free and when they want to give me the money, I tell them it was from my heart. That's priceless so just pay it forward. Now you think that something you could do, then you have got the message why I gave you the balloon. The message I like from you is your smiling."

"I'm from Chile and I came to Banff 2 and a half years ago to learn new cultures. It has been long journey since. It was very challenging at first as I didn't speak much english and I didn't have friends. But later I started to meet people and make friends while volunteering with different organizations. I also met my girlfriend here.
I think it is very easy to make new friends and meet people if you volunteer. It is also a great way to help to the community and for the non english speakers it is a great way to improve their english. Volunteering did not only help me to make new friends but it also helped me to improve my english. I have been volunteering with different organizations for 8 month and I volunteer with BanffLife now."

"I had been dreaming of going to Canada since 2005 and it was only in 2011 that I obtained the WHV(work and holiday visa). I had just come back from 3 years of living abroad and I had until the end of 2012 to enter to Canada. So I decided to work in France for a little bit before setting my departure date. Shortly after, I got into a relationship that rapidly turned out pretty toxic and I got manipulated into thinking that travelling was not right for me and that I should stay in my country to build a career and a "life". Gradually, Canada was not an option anymore. A difficult winter and summer passed and by September 2012, I was living with my dad at the edge of depression, with absolutely no goal. Pressure to live along the "normal" path was strong and I was encouraged to look for work and forget about Canada, which I did. End of October, I found a very well-paid job in a major oil company. The job wasn't challenging at all but it was comfortable. Very quickly though, it brought me straight back to my life pre-travels and I felt like my time abroad was a distant dream. I was working in a department sending engineers over to Calgary so I kept hearing the words "Caribou", "Maple Syrup" and other significant symbols of Canada and for some reason, everywhere I looked I could see Canadian flags. This is when I realised that my little flame was still burning deep inside me and I could not ignore it anymore. But I had a perfect job, my family was proud of my achievement. Why sacrifice this picture, the perfect life? Because I wasn't happy. I wasn't "me". For all the money and glory I could get, I preferred to take the risk to throw it all to the ground and listen to my heart. So one day, to the dismay of my manager and a lot of people around me including my family...I decided to quit. I had absolutely no particular plan, people called me crazy but all I knew was that I didn't want to regret it for the rest of my life, forever asking myself the question: "What if I had gone to Canada?"...

My next step was to book a plane and time was running, it was end of November...I wanted to spend Christmas with my family as I had been away for the past 4 Christmas, so I booked my plane to Montreal on December 28th, 2012...only 3 days before my WHV expired. I was still very fragile morally but I knew this was what I had to do. There was a big blizzard in Montreal that day so my plane was delayed several hours and I wondered if destiny was eventually going to allow me on Canadian soil before my deadline...but I made it. I made it! I spent one week in Montreal setting everything up (bank, sin number, etc) and looking for my next destination. I had a friend in Canmore who invited to come and check it out, and she said Calgary was nearby if I couldn't find any job in the valley. Little did I know that employement here is plentiful. After a few days only, I decided to stay in the valley. It was cold and snowy but I had a good feeling about it. Only 1 hour after dropping off my CV at Beamer's Coffee Bar, the management called me to let me know that I was hired!! I was so, so happy!! I didn't know how to use an espresso machine so I was very grateful to get an opportunity to learn a new skill...and this is how it all began.

If there is one advice I can give to anybody out there that is experiencing unhappiness or sorrow in their lives, it is: listen to your heart, acknowledge that little flame inside you, it will always be alive even if you try to blow it off. Your heart knows exactly what is good for you. And the further away you stay from your heart, the more unhappy you will be. Life is not easy and you will go through tough times, but your heart will always guide you back to the right path."

How long have you guys been skating?
"Let me tell you a story.
I was gonna have a boy and I had a girl so I bought her a skateboard. As she grew I took pictures of her on the skateboard. Then I was buying her the parts of the skateboard to give her to play with because we didn't have enough toys and stuff to play with. You know, I gave her all the parts and she played with all the shapes and everything. When she turned one I sat her down in front of me, I built the skateboard in front of her and then I ollie on it. She was like wow and then she was hooked on to skating after that.
She has been skating pretty much since they have been able to stand on a skateboard without falling off. So yeah they have been skating for a long time."
