Ǧilakasl̓a (Thank you) to the ladies for their beautiful dancing in the Kʷənwac̓i (House of Thunder – our Big House) at the Lik̓ʷala Indigenous Fluency Language graduation ceremony. We thank Jason Wilson and the drummers for this beautiful Paddy Grey song, which belongs to the Grey family from the We Wai Kai. It was a beautiful event. Congratulations to all the graduates.

Wei Wai K*m’s Guardian Watchmen responded to a sunken vessel at Discovery Harbour Marina today. It was a strong collaborative effort, working alongside the Canadian Coast Guard and Nanwakolas to manage the response. Ǧilakasʼla! Thanks to all!

Big news for Campbell River! Harbour Air's new seasonal direct route between Campbell River and Downtown Vancouver has officially arrived, with service operating from ʔuxstalis (Tyee Spit), an important ancestral gathering place of the Liǧʷiłdax̌ʷ people. The inaugural flight departed Vancouver this morning, where Wei Wai K*m members Caroline Roberts and Marshall Obratoski took part in the ribbon cutting ceremony.

On arrival in Campbell River, the plane was welcomed with a Blessing Ceremony and Welcome Song, shared by Chief Chris Roberts, Andrew Puglas Jr, and Jason Wilson. Chief Roberts then joined Mayor Kermit Dahl, Jason Wilson, Andrew Puglas Jr, and City of Campbell River staff Markella Gionet and Erin Neely for a second ribbon cutting, recognizing the opportunities this new connection creates for our region.

The route will make it even easier for visitors to experience everything our community has to offer, including the Discovery Harbour Shopping Centre, House of Treasures, Thunderbird RV Park, and unforgettable adventures with Campbell River Whale Watching & Adventure Tours.

For Wei Wai K*m members and local residents, this is exciting news as well. A convenient 55-minute direct flight to downtown Vancouver is now available right from our doorstep, making travel for business, appointments, and leisure more accessible than ever.

Today we gathered in the Kʷənwac̓I (our Big House) to celebrate a truly special milestone: the first graduating cohort of the Indigenous Language Fluency Certificate in Liq̓ʷala, delivered in partnership with North Island College. Fourteen students completed this journey, from high school dual-credit learners through to Elders, coming together to learn, practise, and carry forward our language. The celebration honoured not only the students, but also the instructors, families, knowledge holders, and community members whose support made it possible. Language is at the heart of who we are. It connects our generations, carries our teachings, and strengthens our community. To hear it spoken, sung, and celebrated in the Kʷənwac̓I was a powerful reminder of how far we've come, and how bright the future is. Congratulations to every graduate. *m

Happy Canada Day! The community came together for a beautiful drumming and dancing cultural presentation by the Liǧʷiɫdax̌ʷ Youth & Elders Cultural Group at the Campbell River Community Centre. Ǧilakasl̓a! Wishing everyone a wonderful day of celebrations!

On June 19, with Campbell River Mayor Kermit Dahl in attendance, a senior carver led a Down Blessing Ceremony alongside Wei Wai K*m Chief Chris Roberts at the Heritage Park Pavilion, ahead of the City of Campbell River's work to repair the building's roof. The Pavilion features carved poles and beams by indigenous artists, including: Sam Henderson and his sons, Bob Need, Dora (Sewid) Cook, Ben Dick, Alfred Jones, Adam and Blackie Dick, and Eugene Alfred. This cultural site holds deep significance for the Liǧʷiɫdax̌ʷ people, who have gathered here for generations for ceremonies and family celebrations. A commemorative plaque at the pavilion, dedicated at its opening on July 1, 1972, reads: "KYE-LA-KAS-LA KLA-MA-TO" — Welcome to Campbell River. Wei Wai K*m has been working with the City to care for this important cultural asset, and is pleased to support the roof repair work now underway. Wei Wai K*m Nation is grateful to be part of this work, honouring the past as we look to support our future cultural presence in the region.

Wei Wai K*m First Nation's Guardian Watchmen were out on the water this month, travelling to Loughborough Inlet for a full round of stewardship work across the territory! The team covered a lot of ground — retrieving water temperature sensors at Fraser Creek (supporting a planned Chum Salmon Enhancement Project this fall), installing a bear camera for summer movement tracking, deploying six prawn traps within the Indigenous Protected Conservation Area, and collecting eDNA water samples to test whether the Stafford and Apple rivers historically supported ooligan. They also completed a Steelhead Spawning Study snorkel survey on the Apple River, and wrapped up the trip at Heydon River to check a fish-counting fence jointly monitored with DFO. All data is recorded in the Guardian database, with the Indigenous Centre for Aquatic Health Sciences supporting analysis. Stewardship in action!
