Victims of human trafficking may not realize they’re being exploited. Every trafficking situation is complex and unique, and numerous factors can affect a person’s ability to identify what they’re experiencing as trafficking.
Some reasons a person may not identify their experience as trafficking include:
🔹 Language barriers
🔹 Limited awareness of what trafficking can look like
🔹 The trafficker is someone they trust, like an intimate partner or family member
🔹 Lack of knowledge about their rights in Canada
🔹 Fear of retaliation from the trafficker
🔹 Isolation from support networks that could help them recognize the situation
