Congratulations!!!

A new generation has taken leadership in Samson Cree Nation.

24-year-old Izaiah Swampy-Omeasoo has been elected Chief, marking a generational shift in one of the largest First Nations in Canada.

Before becoming Chief, Swampy-Omeasoo had already become known to many community members through advocacy for younger voices in leadership and governance.

He also attempted to run for Chief in 2020, but was barred because he did not meet the Nation’s minimum age requirement for candidates.

The Nation’s change in leadership also arrives after years of community conversations around transparency, accountability, healing, and trust within Samson Cree Nation.

Since the results were announced, many community members online have described the shift towards their young leadership as hopeful — rallying around change and renewal.

Following the election, Swampy-Omeasoo wrote:
“Let the healing begin my people.”

What do you hope the next generation of Indigenous leaders brings?

tansi relatives,

I have grown up on kakisiwew-ochapowace Nation my whole life. Our people know me, my integrity, and the values I carry. I know our people, our families, our strengths, and the challenges we continue to face together.

Over the years, I have worked hard to prepare myself for leadership and service to our Nation. From leaving home for post-secondary education to working within the legal system, to representing our Nation and First Nations peoples.

Creator has placed me on paths and provided me with experiences that have led me to where I am today, and for that I will forever be grateful.

I have worked hard for our Nation, and I have spoken honestly about the issues we face. Whether it has been advocating to protect our rights, bringing partnerships and funding into our community, supporting youth and sports, advancing justice initiatives, or representing our people - I have always believed that leadership requires honesty, accountability, and the courage to have difficult conversations for the betterment of our people.

Just to clarify, I am currently completing my Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. I attempted to finish (online) while balancing council responsibilities and school, but withdrew from my remaining classes this term due to workload. I’m proud of the education and experience I’ve worked hard for and remain committed to completing my degree!

I want to outline the boards and commissions I currently sit on or have sat on.

Since being elected in 2023, I was appointed to kakisiwew-ochapowace Nation’s Treasury Board by our council.

I also sit on the Bear Claw Community Development Corporation (BCCDC) board alongside 3 other members of Council. The board meets periodically throughout the year. Roughly about 5-7 times in a year.

Following my election, I was appointed by the Chief to sit on the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) Indian Justice Commission, which focuses on justice-related issues affecting First Nations. We meet maybe 3-4 times a year.

Prior to being elected to Council, I was appointed in 2023 to the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) 2S+ National Council. My term on that council ended in February 2025, I no longer represent AFN.

I was also appointed by Council to sit as a proxy member for the Atoskewin Economic Development Board. However, the proxy position did not allow full participation in board matters, and I ultimately resigned from that position.

I have always tried to use these opportunities to advocate for our Nation, build relationships, and bring knowledge and experience back to our community.

I want to hear from our people. If you have questions, concerns, ideas, or simply want to visit, please call or text me anytime - my number is on the pamphlet 🙂

I humbly ask for your support, your prayers, and your trust as we move forward.

May 10th, 2026

Earlier this week, my brother Trey and I went to the care home to attend the Mother’s Day tea with our Kokum Sandi. It was really nice to spend time with her.

Today, we gathered for Mother’s Day lunch and went golfing together. My mom, my auntie, my sister, and Kendra all came out. Spending time with the mommas đŸ€Ž

Days like today make me think about the women who raised us. The women who carried families on their backs during hard times. The women who sacrificed quietly. Who prayed for us when we didn’t even know it. Who loved us through our mistakes, protected us, believed in us, and somehow still kept going no matter how heavy life became.

I also know Mother’s Day can carry a lot of emotions. Some people are missing their moms today. Some are grieving children. Some are carrying heartbreak quietly. I’m thinking of those people too tonight.

To all of the mothers, matriarchs, kokums, aunties, and caregivers - thank you for everything you do.

Happy Mother’s Day to you all ❀

tĂąnsi kakisiwew-ochapowace Nation,

In the spirit of transparency and accountability, I am publicly sharing my clear vulnerable sector/criminal record check, along with my clear drug and alcohol testing results.

This was not required of me. I chose to do this because I believe our people deserve leadership that is open and honest.

As Chief, I will continue working toward a healthy, safe, and professional environment within our Nation.

Vote Tyler George for Chief on May 16th, 2026.
