Sexual Assault Centre for Quinte and District Sexual Assault Programs including crisis line, 1:1 counselling, support groups, and Paths of Courage

In 1987 an Emergency Health Care Needs study found a great need for sexual assault services in the counties of Hastings and Prince Edward. In 1990 some local women, including women from the Safe Homes agencies, formed a committee to solicit funds for sexual assault services. With funding from the Ontario Ministry of Community and Social Services this committee hired a local therapist to facilitate

a group to train other therapists to work with survivors of sexual violence. In addition, they were able to obtain funding from the Ontario Women’s Directorate to provide Hastings and Prince Edward Counties with a Sexual Assault Protocol and Community Service Plan. Next, the committee secured an $80 000 grant from the Ontario Ministry of Health and hired a coordinator for the Centre. The Sexual Assault Centre for Quinte and District officially began operation on June 24, 1991. In addition to Centre activities that are focused in the Belleville area, sexual assault services and co-ordination of services are provided to outlying areas. SACQD services extend throughout Hastings and Prince Edward Counties, through locations in Belleville, Trenton, Picton and Bancroft.

We acknowledge the ongoing impacts of colonial violence and remain committed to learning, reflection, advocacy, and walking alongside Indigenous communities in the pursuit of healing, justice, and reconciliation.

At the Sexual Assault Centre for Quinte and District, Pride is about more than celebration—it's about visibility, safety, inclusion, and belonging.

We recognize that 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals continue to experience disproportionately high rates of sexual violence, harassment, discrimination, and barriers to support. During Pride Month, we honour the strength, and diversity of 2SLGBTQIA+ communities while reaffirming our commitment to providing survivor-centred, trauma-informed, and inclusive services for all.

This month, and every month, we stand alongside 2SLGBTQIA+ community members, families, and allies.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month is a time to raise awareness, challenge harmful myths, support survivors, and continue important conversations about consent, safety, and healing. In Canada, millions of people have experienced sexual violence, yet many survivors never report what happened due to fear, shame, stigma, or systemic barriers. This month reminds us that every survivor deserves to be believed, supported, and treated with dignity. Together, we can help create safer, more compassionate communities.

Shared in solidarity.

Today, Quinte Health marks our first annual Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) Awareness Day.

We lowered our flags in memory of our colleague, Shannan Hickey, and in recognition of all those who have lost their lives to intimate partner violence.

At sunset, our teams will place and light flameless candles in windows and visible spaces across our hospitals—a quiet, shared moment of remembrance.

Her light shines on in how we care for one another. 💜

In the healing journey, setting boundaries can become one of the greatest forms of protection. 🤍

Boundaries help create safety, rebuild trust within ourselves, and honour our emotional, physical, and mental wellbeing.

Healing may teach us that:
• saying “no” is okay
• protecting our peace is necessary
• rest is productive
• access to us is not automatic

Boundaries are not barriers to love or connection — they are acts of self-respect, safety, and healing.
