October 18th was National Persons Day. On this day in 1927 women were declared persons under law. I was thrilled while at a Municipal conference in Calgary, to find these sculptures of the Famous Five women who made it happen

Here in the Municipality of Mississippi Mills, we manage a portfolio of public infrastructure—roads, bridges, water and wastewater systems, parks and community facilities—that contributes to nearly a trillion dollars in municipal assets across Ontario.

That’s more than both the provincial and federal governments combined. And yet, we do it with limited funding and fewer fiscal tools.

Despite these constraints, Mississippi Mills continues to deliver a wide range of services that directly shape the quality of life for our residents. In fact, municipalities in Ontario take on more responsibilities than anywhere else in Canada. Locally, that includes critical areas like:

🏠 Land use planning and development: Shaping how our community grows – balancing diverse housing options, vibrant commercial spaces and responsible development.
🚧 Infrastructure maintenance and renewal: Keeping our roads safe, our water clean and our public spaces welcoming.
🏞️ Recreation and culture: Investing in what makes our community vibrant – from trails and facilities to programs and partnerships.
🚒 Emergency services: Delivering fast and compassionate fire response and professional policing through our OPP contract.
👶 Child care and early learning: Ensuring families have access to safe, affordable and high-quality early education.

All of this is accomplished with resourcefulness, collaboration and a deep commitment to community well-being. We stretch every dollar, advocate for fair funding and work tirelessly to meet growing demands.
