🍂𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿: 𝗔 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗾𝗲́𝗺𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝗵'𝘀 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗺𝗼𝗻🐟

Work to restore salmon habitat and support Sq’éwqel’s wildlife will resume next week on the Slough, in areas North of Kamp Rd . Two restoration projects will take place upstream of Kamp Road to just south of Lizzie Lake along Sqémelech (Maria Slough). These projects will improve water flow, create a healthy environment for salmon and other native fish, and protect habitat that is crucial for Oregon spotted frogs.

Last fall, Seabird’s Fish & Wildlife division cleared sticks and debris from the unused culvert upstream of Kamp Road. They are now ready to remove the culvert entirely so that the natural movement of the water can flow freely.

They will also be building upon last year’s success by reconnecting a historic side channel to the slough to establish better water flow and salmon pathways. These measures are part of an overall effort to revitalize the environment, which will result in a healthier ecosystem that buzzes with life, similar to that which once sustained the area.

Since being severed from the Fraser River in 1948, Sqémelech’s salmon have struggled to thrive as they faced dwindling conditions. By reconnecting the waterways, we’re promoting salmon recovery, boosting native biodiversity, and honouring the deep cultural importance salmon hold for our community and the land.
