TLOKWENG LAND BOARD INTENSIFIES DRIVE AGAINST IDLE LAND AS RESIDENTIAL AREAS COME UNDER SCRUTINY
TLOKWENG โ The Tlokweng Land Board is set to expand its land compliance and repossession efforts to residential areas this year, following years of focusing primarily on commercial, industrial, and other non-residential properties.
Addressing communities during a series of kgotla meetings that concluded today, Tlokweng Land Board Chairperson, Mr Elijah Katse, announced that the Board will begin identifying undeveloped residential plots within built-up areas and initiate repossession procedures where plot holders have failed to comply with development covenants.
Mr Katse said the initiative is aimed at unlocking idle land that could potentially be reallocated to deserving applicants who are in need of residential plots.
"The Land Board has been mandated to identify idle and allocated but unutilised land. This exercise will help us fulfil that responsibility while ensuring that land resources are put to productive use," he said.
The Chairperson explained tnhat landowners are required to develop their plots within specified periods outlined in their title documents. Development covenants require residential plots to be developed within five years of allocation, while commercial, industrial, civic and community, agro-tourism, horticultural plots and mixed-use plots must be developed within one year. Arable farming and integrated farming are required to be developed within three years.
As part of the enforcement campaign, the Land Board will concentrate on Metlhabeng, Lesunyana, and Lenganeng wards during the current financial year. Officials will conduct field assessments of undeveloped plots and open spaces while engaging residents to help identify plot owners.
Mr Katse appealed to community members to cooperate with Land Board officials and ensure that their plots comply with the applicable development conditions to avoid possible repossession.
"We encourage all plot owners to familiarise themselves with the conditions attached to their land rights and take the necessary steps to develop their properties within the stipulated timeframes," he said.
Mini Land Audit Planned for Maboane Lands
In a related development, the Tlokweng Land Board will undertake a mini land audit at Maboane Lands during the current financial year to assess the availability and utilisation of agricultural land.
