Why is Patient Safety a requirement in a clinic or hospital setting?

•Upholding Core Value: The main rule of healthcare is to not harm and protect people when they are sick or weak.

•Preventing Avoidable Harm: avoiding medical errors such as wrong medication doses,surgical errors, or infections-these can be stopped with clear rules.

•Reducing Costs: Fixing mistakes takes extra time,medicine and money from both the patient and hospitals.

•Building Trust: People need to feel safe when they visit a health facility so that they will seek help when they need it.

TODAY IS WORLD PATIENT SAFETY DAY

World Patient Safety Day 2026 is observed on 17 September 2026 under the theme “Safe care for non-communicable diseases” and the slogan “Safe care for life!”. The campaign highlights the importance of reducing avoidable harm in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and long-term management of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs).

People living with NCDs often require continuous care across multiple settings over long periods of time, creating multiple opportunities for safety risks to arise. The 2026 campaign emphasizes the need to strengthen patient safety across the continuum of care through a primary health care approach, while addressing broader health system challenges and social determinants that may increase the risk of harm. It also highlights the importance of meaningful engagement of people living with NCDs in the design and delivery of care and services.

THE INTREPID GROUP BOTSWANA CAPACITATES NEWLY RECRUITED NURSES ON FINANCIAL WELLNESS

The Ministry of Health in partnership with the Intrepid Group Botswana capacitated newly recruited nurses on financial wellness yesterday.

The programme was facilitated by Financial Advisor,Mr. Thompson Rano. The purpose of the session was to equip the new healthcare workers with practical skills on budgeting,debt management,saving and investing to ensure long term financial stability as they begin their career in public service.

As they begin this journey of caring for patients,the new nurses were also reminded to care for themselves starting with their finances.

YOUTH URGED TO BE CORRUPTION WATCHDOGS IN HEALTH SECTOR DURING MoH YOUTH PITSO

The Ministerial Corruption Committee which is chaired by the Permanent Secretary,Ministry of Health hosted a virtual Corruption Prevention Pitso themed 'Igniting Intergrity: Youth in action against corruption.'

The target group for the workshop was the youth and the aim was to promote a culture of intergrity among young people employed within the Ministry of Health and encourage their active participation in prevention and combating corruption.

This interactive and impactful platform educated more than 50 youth in Scottish Livingstone Hospital and empowered them to act as active watchdogs in safeguarding healthcare resources.The Youth were also urged to monitor service delivery and pledge to challenge corruption and promote absolute transparency,demand accountability within the health sector.

The Youth Pitso reflected a broader National Strategy by the Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime which is aimed at raising widespread public awareness about the socio-economic dangers of corruption.
