🎶🌍 BW‑NEA TEAM TRAVERSES BOTSWANA — THEME SONG IN MOTION! 🌍🎶

“Tsela ye, tsela ye, tsela ye kana e telele…” 🎵 — Ezra Neethings’ anthem has become the BW‑NEA Team Theme Song as they traverse the length and breadth of Botswana, delivering the findings of the BW‑NEA Technical Report. 🚐📖✨

📍 On 7 June 2026, a team of twelve left Gaborone for six district destinations — Kgalagadi, Gantsi, Okavango, Chobe, Tutume, and the villages of Mabutsane and Sekoma in Ngwaketse West. The delegation included four BUAN professors and doctors, a Public Relations officer, and eight DEP officers — among them the ever‑present Mr. Obonye Mbise Magaga and Gomolemo Kgosimore, 📸 documenting the journey and stories with passion and precision. 🌍✨

📅 By 13 June, duty called the BUAN team back to Gaborone, but the mission gained strength with the addition of Ms. Kebaabetswe Keoagile, BIOFIN Lead, guiding implementation of the Fourth Phase of the project. 🌱💼

📊 To date, the team has successfully paid courtesy calls and delivered findings to District Leadership and Dikgosi in Tsabong, Gantsi, Mabutsane, and Chobe. On 16 June, Team B pressed on to Satau, while Team A engaged communities in Sekoma and Khakhea, under the leadership of District Commissioner Rre Kalante. The kgotla was packed 👥🏠 and the findings well received.

🚀 Next week, Team A heads to Okavango while Team B covers Tutume District, focusing on the Nata villages. The mission will culminate on 28 June with both teams returning to Gaborone — tired but fulfilled 💪🌍, ready to present findings to institutions still awaiting this crucial report.

💡 The BW‑NEA Technical Report is not just another document; it is a blueprint for Botswana’s national planning processes. As BUAN Vice Chancellor Professor Mosepele declared at the launch: “This report is the Bible for policy making in Botswana.” 📖🙏

🌿DEP UNDERTAKES A NATIONAL CAPACITY NEEDS ASSESSMENT OF RESEARCH AND ACADEMIC INSTITUTIONS UNDER THE GEF-FINANCED ACCESS AND BENEFIT SHARING (ABS) PROJECT 🧬

The Ministry of Environment and Tourism’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), is currently conducting a national capacity needs assessment of research and academic institutions.

This critical exercise is being implemented under the Global Environment Facility (GEF)-financed project on Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS).

🇧🇼 Key Objectives of the Initiative:
* Advance Research: Promote innovation and value addition of national genetic resources.
* Protect Traditional Knowledge: Strengthen safeguards for traditional knowledge associated with biodiversity.
* Empower Academic Hubs: Support institutions in expanding bioprospecting and research capabilities.

The project task team has identified and is assessing key institutions nationwide. Enhancing these facilities is vital to driving national research and development within our established ABS framework.

💎🌍 Beyond Diamonds: Botswana’s Sustainable Wealth 🌍💎

After years of intensive research across six ecosystems, the BUAN institution, on behalf of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET) and with technical support from the National Ecosystem Assessment (NEA) Initiative at UNEP‑WCMC, has concluded that Botswana can shift from diamond dependence to something bigger, better, safer, and sustainable: natural resources. 🌱✨

📊 The report shows that with value addition, many of our natural resources can compete in international markets, improve livelihoods, and transform communities. The message is clear: we are sitting on a diamond we may not yet realize. 💎🌍

👥 Communities are encouraged to think big, collaborate, and turn findings into products and services. So far, the team has covered Kgalagadi, Ghanzi, and Tswapong, sharing this feedback. Next, they will be in Mabutsane and Chobe, with a stop at Qabo, engaging communities and discussing possible funded projects. 💰🌾

🤝 The team confirms they have funds available to assist communities in implementing these recommendations — turning research into real opportunities. All CBNRMs are urged to attend without fail.

✨🌱 Fact: Botswana’s ecosystems hold substantial untapped potential to drive nature‑based economic diversification and strengthen community resilience.

👉 Botswana ka monatyi! Together, let’s turn science into action — for our ecosystems, our communities, and our future. 🌍💚🔥

🔥🌍 BW‑NEA TEAM CONSULTS COMMUNITIES! 🌍🔥

Through the cold winds of Struizendum and Bokspits, and across the rough trails of New Xade, West Hanahai, and East Hanahai, the BW‑NEA Team continues its mission — bringing ecosystem assessment findings back to the people. ❄️💪

📊 Findings from the assessment across six ecosystems were shared, with recommendations set to shape Botswana’s future policies. 🌱

👥 In Struizendum, youth explored opportunities in the ♻️ circular economy, while the team met with BORAVAST Community Resource Management Trust and Itangoo Community Trust to discuss projects that could generate revenue while protecting natural resources. Communities are truly sitting on a diamond they may not yet realize. 💎🌍

💡 BW‑NEA Impact: Phane permits can no longer be issued without Kgosi leadership advice — a milestone that brings traditional knowledge into national decision‑making. 👑✨

📣 The BW‑NEA Team gives a big shout‑out to the East Hanahai youth for honoring the dissemination invitation — your participation strengthens the future of community‑driven sustainability. 🌍💚🔥

🤝 All CBNRMs across the country are encouraged to attend these meetings — they are critical for securing funding to improve livelihoods. 💰🌾

📍 Next Stop – 11 June 2026: Middlepits Kgotla, where communities will engage on findings and possible projects thatt could be funded.

📲 Download the Technical Report using the shared QR Code to explore the full findings and recommendations.

✨🌱 Key Fact:
Traditional knowledge and community‑based governance are critical for sustaining biodiversity and ecosystem services — yet they remain underutilised in formal governance systems. Stronger integration between the two is essential. 🌍💚🔥

👉 With the BW‑NEA, our ecosystems are safe, and our wealth is on the horizon — for our ecosystems, our communities, and our future! 🌍💚🔥

🔥🌍✨ BW‑NEA JOURNEY TAKES OFF! ✨🌍🔥

After powerful consultations with the leadership of Kgalagadi South and Ghanzi District (District Commissioner, Council Secretary, Council Chairperson, Landboard Secretary, Tribal Leadership, Technical Advisory Committee), the BW‑NEA Team is now engaging with the communities of New Xade and Struizendum villages. 👥💬

📢 The consultations began in 2022, and today the team is sharing feedback and findings from the Botswana National Ecosystem Assessment — a nationwide exercise whose results will shape the future policies of our country. 🇧🇼📜

🌱✨ Did You Know?

🏜️ Botswana’s deserts have shrunk by at least 17%, and the grassland and shrubland ecosystem has increased by at 29%.

🤝 Following these engagements, a project identification exercise with Community‑Based Natural Resource Management Organisations (CBNRMOs) will ensure findings are transformed into real projects for livelihoods and resilience. 💪🌍

📍 Catch the BW‑NEA Team tomorrow (10/06/2026) at:
