Today, 22 June, the Embassy of Ukraine and the University of Botswana_Official officially opened Unity Park.

Unity Park was established on the initiative of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Botswana, Prof. David Norris, and the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Prof. Thapelo Otlogetswe, together with the Ambassador of Ukraine to the Republic of Botswana, Dr. Oleksiy Syvak. The park stands as a symbol of the growing friendship between Ukraine and Botswana and the strengthening cooperation between the Embassy of Ukraine and the University of Botswana.

The opening ceremony was attended by the Chancellor of the University of Botswana, Hon. Tebelelo Seretse, members of the University leadership, representatives of the Ministry of International Relations, members of the diplomatic corps, journalists, Embassy interns, students and friends of Ukraine.

Following remarks by Dr. Oleksiy Syvak and Prof. David Norris, a commemorative plaque was unveiled, marking a new chapter in the partnership between the Embassy of Ukraine and the University of Botswana.

The park is located next to Block 101, one of the oldest buildings on the University campus. Constructed in 1973, it was among the first structures of the then University of Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland (UBLS) and played a key role in the development of the institution.

A place that once symbolized the growth of a university now also symbolizes the values that unite our nations: friendship, dialogue and mutual respect.

Thousands of men from 45 African countries, including Botswana, have been lured by Russia with false promises of jobs and high salaries, only to find themselves as soldiers on the front lines. Many were handed military contracts in Russian, a language they don't speak. Hundreds have already been killed.

The EU is now acting: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has proposed banning anyone who served in Russia's armed forces, including foreign nationals, from entering the European Union. As she put it:

"Europe stays off limits for anyone who has participated in the invasion of Ukraine — as simple as that."

⚠️ Protect yourself and your loved ones. If you receive a suspicious job offer involving travel to Russia, do not go. Report it immediately.

Here comes the bill.

Russia launched its full-scale invasion believing Ukraine would be defeated in days. Instead, Ukraine has held the line and grown stronger – while Russia has paid an enormous price in manpower, equipment, and international isolation.

The toll of Russia’s war is proof that its aggression does not come without consequences.
