PRESS RELEASE :

The Embassy of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Botswana announces with deep sorrow the passing of Congolese cyclist and peace advocate Miguel Masaisai, known as “The Unstoppable Masai”, on 18 September 2026 following a road traffic accident in the Republic of the Congo. His passing has been confirmed in reporting by the Congolese Press Agency.

Miguel was received by the Embassy during his July 2025 “Pedals for Peace” journey from Goma (DRC) to Cape Town (RSA). His Gaborone programme ran from 17 to 21 July 2025. He was welcomed by the then Ambassador of the DRC to Botswana and SADC, Her Excellency Emilie Ayaza Mushobekwa, and members of the Embassy team.

During the visit, Miguel engaged with Botswana government institutions, including the ministries responsible for Foreign Affairs and for Youth and Gender, including the minister herself, The Honourable Ms. Lesego Chombo. Miguel also met representatives of the French and Ukrainian diplomatic missions. The young cyclist also took part in youth outreach at the Lady Masire Youth Centre, and also had engagements with media and community organisations, including a virtual interview with Safe Spaces Botswana. His message reached audiences through radio (UB Radio, Yarona FM and GabzFM) and television (BTV) interviews.

On 21 July 2025, he continued towards South Africa following a send-off and solidarity ride from Riverwalk towards Tlokweng. He subsequently completed the journey to Cape Town.
Miguel used his sporting ability to speak for peace and to encourage young people to place their talents at the service of their communities. The Embassy remembers the determination he brought to this mission and the connections he made with people in Botswana.

The Ambassador of The Democratic Republic of Congo, His Excellency Mr. MUTOMBO KAMBILA PATRICK and the Embassy team extend their heartfelt condolences to Miguel’s family, his friends, the Pedals for Peace team and all who supported him. The Embassy also expresses its appreciation to the Botswana institutions, diplomatic missions, youth organisations, media professionals and members of the public who welcomed him.

May his commitment to peace continue to inspire the young people whose lives he touched. May he rest in peace.

Note: The Ministry of Youth and Patriotic Awakening is currently coordinating the repatriation of Miguel’s body to Kinshasa, and will share more details regarding the funeral in due course. The Embassy will keep you updated on these developments.

The Embassy of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Botswana shares the sad news of the passing of Miguel Masaisai, known as “The Unstoppable Masai”, which occurred in Ouesso, northern Republic of the Congo, on 18 September 2026 during his journey that was to take him to Rabat, Morocco.
The Embassy recalls that Miguel, as a true Pan-Africanist and peace athlete, visited Gaborone in July 2025 as part of his “Pedals for Peace” journey connecting Goma (DRC) to Cape Town (South Africa), and remembers the sincere bonds of friendship he forged with the youth and partners in Botswana.
Our most heartfelt condolences go to his family, his loved ones, and the entire Pedals for Peace team.
May his steadfast commitment to peace continue to inspire us.

L’Ambassade de la République Démocratique du Congo au Botswana annonce la triste nouvelle de la disparition de Miguel Masaisai, surnommé « The Unstoppable Masai », survenue à Ouesso au nord du Congo Brazzaville le 18 septembre 2026 lors de son périple qui devait le conduire à Rabat au Maroc.
L’Ambassade rappelle que Miguel, en bon panafricaniste et sportif de la paix, a visité Gaborone en juillet 2025 dans le cadre de son voyage « Pedals for Peace » alors qu'il reliait Goma (RDC) à Cape Town (RSA), ainsi que les liens d'amitié sincères qu'il a su tisser avec la jeunesse et les partenaires au Botswana.

The Embassy of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Gaborone and Permanent Mission to SADC has learned with dismay the sad news of the passing, on August 30, 2026, of His Excellency Sidihaiba Abbes Abdala, Ambassador of Western Sahara accredited to Gaborone.
Having assumed his duties on January 30, 2026—the same day as the DRC Ambassador, H.E. Patrick Mutombo Kambila—Ambassador Sidihaiba Abbes spared no effort in sharing his extensive knowledge regarding the significance of the long-standing struggle for his country, Western Sahara, which he had come to represent with dignity in Gaborone, Botswana.
The Embassy of the DRC extends its deepest condolences to his family, the staff of the Western Sahara diplomatic mission in Gaborone, and all those who knew and loved him.

May his soul rest in peace, and may the African soil rest lightly upon him.

Entré en fonction le 30 janvier 2026 soit le même jour avec l'Ambassadeur de la RDC SEM MUTOMBO KAMBILA Patrick, l'Ambassadeur SIDIHAIBA ABBES n'a épargné aucun effort pour partager avec nous ses larges connaissances sur le sens de la lutte qu'il mène depuis des lustres pour son pays le Sahara Occidental qu'il est venu représenter dignement à Gaborone au Botswana.

🇨🇩🇿🇦 Ce samedi 15 août 2026, à Durban, en Afrique du Sud, le Vice-Premier Ministre, Ministre de la Défense nationale et Anciens combattants, S.E.M. Guy Kabombo Mwadiamvita, la Ministre d'État, Ministre des Affaires étrangères, Coopération internationale et Francophonie, S.E. Madame Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner, et le Ministre de l'Intégration régionale, S.E.M. Floribert Anzuluni Isiloketshi, prennent part aux travaux de haut niveau précédant le 46ᵉ Sommet ordinaire des Chefs d'État et de Gouvernement de la SADC.

La délégation congolaise y porte les priorités de la République démocratique du Congo : la paix et la sécurité régionales, l'intégration économique et la valorisation des minéraux critiques. Cette participation réaffirme le plein engagement de la RDC au sein de la SADC et sa volonté de contribuer activement aux décisions structurant l'intégration et la transformation de l'Afrique australe, dans l'esprit d'un partenariat gagnant-gagnant et d'une diplomatie de résultats respectueuse de la souveraineté nationale, conformément à la vision du Chef de l'État, S.E.
