🕯️ GENOCOST 2026 — Justice, Memory and Dignity

On 2 August 2026, the Embassy of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Botswana and to SADC held a solemn GENOCOST 2026 commemoration at the Open Baptist Church in Gaborone.

The event brought together government representatives, members of the diplomatic corps, members of the clergy, the Congolese community in Botswana, and the general public, united in remembrance of the millions of victims of the violence and conflicts that have affected the Democratic Republic of the Congo for decades.

The programme began with a photographic exhibition highlighting the immense human cost of the conflict. Guests also signed the Book of Remembrance, leaving messages of solidarity, compassion and commitment to truth, memory and justice.

The programme continued with a presentation by Professor Trésor Makunya on the international recognition of the genocides committed in the DRC, followed by a question-and-answer session, testimonies, a musical performance and the screening of a documentary reflecting the realities experienced by the Congolese people.

Deeply moved by the documentary, His Excellency Ambassador Patrick Mutombo Kambila addressed the audience directly:

“I did not know whether I would have the courage to speak to you after watching that film. What you have seen reflects the reality that the Democratic Republic of the Congo is facing. Today, we are commemorating the millions of people who have died as a result of this war. This is a deeply painful tragedy. As Africans, we must stand up and remain focused on the truth about what is happening in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.”

The Ambassador further highlighted the link between the suffering of the Congolese people and the illegal exploitation of the country’s vast natural resources, calling on the audience and the wider international community not to remain silent or look away.

The commemoration concluded with the solemn lighting of six candles in memory of those lost through massacres, hunger and disease, forced displacement, exploitation and political oppression. The final candle symbolised hope and was dedicated to all those working for a peaceful, just and dignified future. A minute of silence was then observed in honour of the victims.

We can no longer say, “We did not know.”
Remembering is a duty. Speaking the truth is an act of justice. Honouring the victims means restoring their names, their stories and their dignity.

💍 A Celebration of Love and Commitment

The Embassy of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Botswana and Permanent Mission to SADC was honoured to host another civil wedding ceremony, officiated by one of the Embassy’s diplomats.

In a warm and dignified setting, the couple formally affirmed their commitment to one another in the presence of family, friends and witnesses.

The Embassy extends its heartfelt congratulations to the newlyweds and wishes them a lifetime of love, happiness, mutual respect and prosperity as they begin this new chapter together.

On Wednesday, 22 July 2026, His Excellency Mr. JOHN SHAMA SHAGA, High Commissioner of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the Republic of Botswana, paid a courtesy visit to His Excellency Mr. PATRICK MUTOMBO KAMBILA, Ambassador of the Democratic Republic of the Congo to Botswana and Permanent Representative to SADC, at the Embassy of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Gaborone.

The two Heads of Mission held cordial and constructive exchanges, reflecting the friendly relations between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The Embassy extends its sincere appreciation to His Excellency Mr. JOHN SHAMA SHAGA for the courteous visit.

Le mercredi 22 juillet 2026, Son Excellence Monsieur JOHN SHAMA SHAGA, Haut-Commissaire de la République Fédérale du Nigéria auprès de la République du Botswana, a effectué une visite de courtoisie auprès de Son Excellence Monsieur PATRICK MUTOMBO KAMBILA, Ambassadeur de la République Démocratique du Congo au Botswana et Représentant permanent auprès de la SADC, au siège de l’Ambassade de la République Démocratique du Congo à Gaborone.

Les deux Chefs de Mission ont eu des échanges cordiaux et constructifs, témoignant des relations amicales qui unissent la République Démocratique du Congo et la République Fédérale du Nigéria.

The Embassy of the Democratic Republic of Congo in Botswana and SADC invites members of the public to the 2026 GENOCOST Commemoration, to be held under the theme:

“Justice, Memory, Dignity”

GENOCOST is a solemn commemoration dedicated to remembering the millions of victims of the conflicts, violence, displacement, and exploitation that have affected the Democratic Republic of Congo, particularly in the eastern part of the country. It is also a call for awareness, justice, peace, dignity, and African solidarity.

The event will include moments of reflection, remembrance, dialogue, and a candle-lighting ceremony in honour of the victims.

Date: Sunday, 02 August 2026
Time: 15:00 – 19:00
Venue: Open Baptist Church
Dress Code: Children and young people are encouraged to dress in white tee shirts.

On 17 June 2026, the Ambassador of the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the Republic of Botswana and to SADC, His Excellency Mr. Patrick Mutombo Kambila, visited Thornhill Primary School, Thornhill Close, Gaborone, to personally thank the 5W Class for proudly wearing the colours of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in commemoration of the Day of the African Child (16 June 2026).
This meaningful gesture of solidarity is deeply appreciated and reflects the values of friendship, cultural openness, and unity among the children of the Africa we aspire to build.
During the visit, His Excellency the Ambassador also presented gifts to the learners and teachers as a token of appreciation for their wonderful initiative and support for the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The Ambassador further gratefully acknowledged the class’s support for the Leopards of Congo, the national football team of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as they proudly represent the Nation on the world stage during the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Le 17 juin 2026, l’Ambassadeur de la République Démocratique du Congo auprès de la République du Botswana et de la SADC, Son Excellence Monsieur Patrick Mutombo Kambila, s’est rendu à Thornhill Primary School, Thornhill Close, Gaborone, afin de remercier personnellement la classe 5W pour avoir porté haut les couleurs de la République Démocratique du Congo à l’occasion de la Journée de l’Enfant Africain (16 June 2026).
Ce geste significatif de solidarité est profondément apprécié et témoigne des valeurs d’amitié, d’ouverture culturelle et d’unité entre les enfants de l’Afrique que nous voulons.
Au cours de cette visite, Son Excellence l’Ambassadeur a également remis quelques présents aux élèves et aux enseignants, en signe de reconnaissance pour leur belle initiative et leur soutien à la République Démocratique du Congo.
L’Ambassadeur a par ailleurs salué, avec reconnaissance, le soutien manifesté par la classe aux Léopards du Congo, l’équipe nationale de football de la République Démocratique du Congo, qui représente fièrement la Nation sur la scène mondiale lors de la Coupe du Monde de la FIFA 2026.
