সম্প্রতি একটি পুরোনো ধর্মান্তর ঘটনার ভিডিও ও তথ্য নতুন করে ভুল ব্যাখ্যা দিয়ে সোশ্যাল মিডিয়ায় ছড়ানো হচ্ছে। এক্স প্ল্যাটফর্মের ‘Voice of Bangladeshi Hindus’ নামের একটি একাউন্ট থেকে পোস্টে দাবি করা হয়—“বাংলাদেশে বাঁচতে হলে ইসলাম ধর্ম গ্রহণ করতে হবে। কুমিল্লার বাদল চন্দ্র শীল তার স্ত্রীর সম্মান রক্ষার জন্য চাপের মুখে পড়ে পুরো পরিবারসহ ইসলাম ধর্ম গ্রহণ করেন।”

অনুসন্ধানে দেখা গেছে, এমন দাবীর সত্যতা নেই।
'Voice of Bangladeshi Hindus', ‘Pakistan Untold’, ‘Hindu Post’ এক্স একাউন্ট গুলো থেকে সাম্প্রতিক সময়ে এমন বিভ্রান্তিকর দাবি প্রচার করা হচ্ছে। বিশেষ করে ৫ আগস্টের পর একাধিক ঘটনাকে সাম্প্রদায়িক রূপ দিয়ে ভুয়া দাবি, গুজব এবং মিসইনফরমেশন ছড়ানো হয়েছে।
ভাইরাল হওয়া দাবির সত্যতা যাচাই করতে গিয়ে দেখা যায়, ঘটনাটি আদতে ২০২১ সালের এপ্রিল মাসে কুমিল্লার বুড়িচং উপজেলার এক হিন্দু পরিবারের স্বেচ্ছায় ইসলাম ধর্ম গ্রহণ করার ঘটনা।
কুমিল্লার মোকাম ইউনিয়নের শীলবাড়ি গ্রামের বাসিন্দা বাদল চন্দ্র শীল (৩৭), তার স্ত্রী শিপ্রা রানী শীল (৩৫) এবং তাদের একমাত্র ছেলে অর্ক চন্দ্র শীল—এই তিনজন ২০২১ সালের ২৮ এপ্রিল কুমিল্লা নোটারি পাবলিক অফিসে উপস্থিত হয়ে হলফনামা মাধ্যমে ইসলাম ধর্ম গ্রহণ করেন।
সনাতন ধর্ম পরিবর্তন করে বাদল চন্দ্র শীলের নাম পরিবর্তন করে রাখেন আল আমিন, তার স্ত্রী শিপ্রা রানী শীলের নাম পরিবর্তন করে রাখেন জান্নাতুল ফেরদৌস ও তাদের একমাত্র ছেলে আর্ক চন্দ্র শীলের নাম পরিবর্তন করে রাখেন মেহেদী হাসান। তাদের পক্ষে আদালতে হলফ করেন শিশুর পিতা বাদল চন্দ্র শীল।
এ ঘটনায় বিভিন্ন সংবাদমাধ্যম যেমন বাংলাদেশ প্রতিদিন, ইউএনবি, নিউজ টোয়েন্টিফোর, ও ডেইলি কুমিল্লা নিউজ-এ ২০২১ সালের সময়েই এই ঘটনা কাভার করা হয়েছিল। কোথাও এমন কোনো তথ্য পাওয়া যায়নি যে এই পরিবারটি জবরদস্তি বা চাপের মুখে ধর্ম পরিবর্তন করেছে।

ধর্মান্তরিত হওয়া ব্যক্তি আল-আমিন (সাবেক নাম বাদল চন্দ্র শীল) সাংবাদিকদের জানিয়েছিলেন, আমরা অনেক ভেবে দেখেছি, ইসলামই শান্তির ধর্ম। ইসলামের নিয়ম-কানুন আমাদের খুব ভালো লেগেছে। তাই আমরা স্বেচ্ছায় ইসলাম গ্রহণ করেছি।
ঘটনার সময়কার তৎকালীন স্থানীয় চেয়ারম্যান সংবাদমাধ্যমে এই ঘটনার সত্যতা নিশ্চিত করেছিলেন এবং বলেছিলেন, পরিবারটি নোটারি পাবলিকের মাধ্যমে স্বেচ্ছায় ধর্মান্তরিত হয়েছেন।
সুতরাং, দাবি করা ‘স্ত্রীর সম্মান রক্ষায় চাপের মুখে ধর্ম পরিবর্তন’এটি একটি ভুল ও মনগড়া ব্যাখ্যা। বাস্তব তথ্য অনুযায়ী, এটি একটি পুরোনো এবং স্বেচ্ছায় ধর্মান্তরের ঘটনা, যেখানে জোর বা হুমকির কোনো প্রমাণ নেই।
Recently, an old incident of religious conversion is being falsely portrayed and spread on social media with misleading interpretations. A post from an account named ‘Voice of Bangladeshi Hindus’ on the X platform claimed:
“To survive in Bangladesh, one must convert to Islam. Badal Chandra Shil from Comilla converted to Islam along with his entire family under pressure to protect the honor of his wife.”

Upon investigation, these claims were found to be baseless.
Accounts such as ‘Voice of Bangladeshi Hindus’, ‘Pakistan Untold’, and ‘Hindu Post’ have recently been promoting such misleading narratives. Especially after August 5, multiple incidents have been given a communal spin with false claims, rumors, and misinformation.
Fact-checking the viral claim reveals that the incident actually took place in April 2021, when a Hindu family in Burichang upazila of Comilla voluntarily converted to Islam.
On April 28, 2021, Badal Chandra Shil (37), his wife Shipra Rani Shil (35), and their only son Arko Chandra Shil—residents of Shilbari village in Mokam Union, Comilla—appeared at the Comilla Notary Public Office and converted to Islam through an affidavit.
After converting from Sanatan (Hindu) religion:
Badal Chandra Shil changed his name to Al Amin
His wife Shipra Rani Shil became Jannatul Ferdous
Their son Arko Chandra Shil was renamed Mehedi Hasan
Badal Chandra Shil himself signed the affidavit on behalf of the family in court.
This event was covered at the time by several media outlets including Bangladesh Pratidin, UNB, News24, and Daily Comilla News in 2021. Nowhere was it reported that the family was coerced or pressured into conversion.

Al Amin (formerly Badal Chandra Shil) had told journalists at the time:
“We thought about it deeply. Islam is a religion of peace. We liked the teachings and practices of Islam. That’s why we willingly accepted Islam.”
The local Union Chairman at the time also confirmed the authenticity of the incident to the media and stated that the family converted voluntarily through the notary public.
Therefore, the claim that the conversion happened ‘under pressure to protect the wife’s honor’ is false and fabricated.
Based on verified facts, this was an old case of voluntary conversion, with no evidence of force or intimidation.
