A beautiful article. Especially when you see the tortured little boys who grow to seize power as self-aggrandising and emotionally cauterised.

Many boys educated privately hand their trauma to the next generation – and, dangerously, to those who are raised to govern, says Guardian columnist Gaby Hinsliff

More food for thought on the open plan classroom.

What's your experience?

Classroom designs should not create more work for teachers, just to make sure their students can hear them – and each other.

Kids Thrive Creative Director Andrea Rieniets, a musician with high sensitivity is not a fan.

Having been active across Victoria in delivering action-based creative training to primary students she's been in shiney new open spaces and tiny schools over 100 years old. No guessing which she prefers.

'Teaching in the open planning classrooms is like doing rich. deep cultural collaboration in a shopping mall, except one in which OUR noise-making from moving, singing and dancing becomes the problem for others unable to close their doors.

How do kids with auditory processing or attention difficulties attach to any teaching when it's wanging around in spaces with such shocking acoustics?

I do wonder if open classrooms may have been designed in part to expose teachers to factory floor oversight rather than being child-centred, soul centred designs.'

What do you think?

NSW is ceasing construction of outdated open-plan classrooms, but Victorian students could be left to learn in the distracting, noisy environments.

“Over the past two years, I’ve had to juggle working from home and remote learning with a primary school aged child. We purchased an iPad for learning and then had it ‘babysitting’ our child while I was in Zoom meetings. I know she has been exposed to online gambling and increased habits for...

A child-led social change model, how does it work?

Kids Thrive is Victoria’s leading arts and community development organisation nurturing child-led social change. We partner artists with specialists in children’s education, health, welfare and social justice to create ground-breaking programs promoting child-led change, and cultivating positive celebrations of diversity in schools and other child-friendly locations.

Kids Thrive defines child-led change as:

💫Children taking a lead in identifying community strengths, and finding ways to increase those strengths through their own actions.

💫Children identifying community problems and finding solutions and actions they can take to address these problems – with or without the support of adults.

💫Children taking life-transforming ideas and skills back to their homes and communities, leading their adults by example into new ways of being in the world.

The Kids Thrive child-led social change model empowers children to be brave and creative.
It activates them to identify the change they want to see in their communities and puts the tools in their hands to help lead this change

What is kinaesthetic learning?

from Greek kinein "to move" + aisthēsis "capacity for sensation", kinaesthetic learning refers to a style of teaching using movements and hands on activities.

What are the benefits?

Being performing artists, here at Kids Thrive, we have noticed time and time again the numerous benefits there are in integrating movements in learning practices.

When students learn through movement, games, and activities, they begin solving problems more creatively.

Movement prepares the brain for learning while simultaneously offering brain breaks during times of high stress towards academic performance.

Structured movement can also increase class cohesion while strengthening students' individual physical fitness.
