Meet this ball of energy, Walter!

This intelligent, highly energetic 2.5-year-old Staffy X is highly ball driven and would thrive with an active family.

Walter will require plenty of enrichment, exercise, and mental stimulation.

Also, like a Harrier jump jet, Walter has VSTOL power and can climb out of yards with ease, so a secure yard with high fencing is recommended.

The adoption cost for Walter (ImpD26/0171) is $323and includes lifetime registration, vaccination, desexing, a heartworm test, treatment for fleas and worms, and an ID tag.

See all our available pets at graswagga.com.au or visit the shelter to meet them. The Glenfield Road Animal Shelter is open from Monday to Saturday, 1pm – 4 .15pm.

Wagga Youth meet with the NSW Advocate for Children and Young People

Local young people had a unique experience of sharing their regional perspectives with the newly appointed NSW Advocate for Children and Young People Katherine McKernin and NSW Office for Youth Director Julia Ryan during their recent visit to Wagga Wagga.

Council’s Youth Development Officer Melissa Fattore said this opportunity is important for Wagga Wagga’s young people as it means their insights of living in a regional community directly inform key strategies for the state.

If you know a young person aged 12 to 25 years who would like to share their ideas, Wagga Wagga City Council hosts the Youth of Wagga Crew, a free monthly catch-up running on the first Thursday of every month from 4:30pm to 6pm in the City Library.

** Night work on the Sturt Highway in Wagga Wagga **

Transport for NSW advises motorists there will be changed traffic conditions from next week on the Sturt Highway at Ashmont for essential maintenance work, including road resurfacing between Edward Street West and the Olympic Highway Rest Area.

To minimise impacts on motorists, work will be carried out between 6pm and 6am from early next week and take around two weeks to complete, weather permitting.

Single lane closures, stop/slow traffic control and a reduced speed limit of 40 km/h will be in place for the safety of workers and motorists. A reduced speed limit of 60 km/h will be in place outside of work hours.

Motorists are advised to drive to the conditions, follow the directions of signs and traffic control and allow an extra five minutes of travel time.

Transport for NSW thanks motorists for their patience during this time.

Seventy nest boxes are being installed or replaced across various sites in our local government area this week to support local wildlife.

Our Environment & Sustainability team and contractors were out and about today (Wednesday 17 June), installing the boxes at a local Council-managed reserve.

It's all part of Council's nest box replacement project, which is designed to ensure there are a range of suitable nest boxes available for arboreal mammals and birds.

The nest boxes come in different shapes and sizes, and are specially made to provide shelter for possums, microbats, birds (such as the swift and superb parrot), and squirrel gliders, which are endangered or vulnerable species.

Preparing for the installations has been a community effort, with 55 squirrel glider nest boxes made by students at The Riverina Anglican College, Defence Shed Wagga Wagga making the bracing systems for the nest boxes, while other nest boxes were donated by Riverina Local Land Services.

Harris Park amenities refurbishment unveiled!

Stage 1 of the upgrade and extension of the amenities block located at Harris Park in Mount Austin was officially unveiled at a ceremony today (16 June).

The project paves the way to boosting women’s and girls’ sporting participation in Wagga Wagga and the wider Riverina.

The upgrade commenced in August 2025 and features new female, male and referee changerooms, upgraded canteen, bar and storage areas, a modern meeting space, and new bathrooms, including accessible and ambulant toilets, for community use.

The city's mayor, Councillor Dallas Tout, says the improvements give players, volunteers, and the wider community a much better asset to use and enjoy, while the new meeting room will be a real hub for community groups and sporting clubs.

Harris Park is used for cricket and rugby league competitions, as well as by the broader community.

The $1.3-million Stage 1 works to upgrade and modernise the facility were funded through the NSW Office of Sports’ Greater Cities Sport Facility Fund, in partnership with Council and Wagga Rugby League (WRL).

Work on Stage 2 of the project, which is funded separately through NSW Rugby League, involves construction of a new upstairs broadcast area, including an area for camera operated live streaming of matches, and a function room area.

Work is underway on a staged upgrade of the Workout Gym change rooms and weights area.

The project aims to improve access, comfort, and equipment quality for all patrons of the Wagga Leisure facility.

The initial phase focuses on the upgrade and general refurbishment of the male change room, and construction of two brand-new unisex change rooms with showers, providing an additional changing option closer to the gym floor.

The upgrades will transform the space to provide a recovery area for gym user, including an ice-bath room to go with the existing sauna, as well as space for future expansion.

During the works there may be some temporary access changes and intermittent noise during construction periods.

Efforts are being made to minimise disruption to members and visitors during the works and the team will communicate any specific access changes in advance wherever possible.

It's part of a larger suite of upgrades to the facility that commenced after Council took over its management in 2025.
