Today’s news that LION has made the decision to close its Boag’s brewery in Launceston at the end of the year is devastating news for the 42 workers and for the community of Northern Tasmania.

The brewery has long been central to Launceston life - and I thank LION for their commitment to consult with the affected workers, to find redeployment opportunities and for looking at setting up a reskilling and community fund.

I am pleased to see that Boag’s Brewhouse will remain open, and that the company will work closely with all levels of Government about the future of the brewery site.

This is very difficult news for the community. The Albanese Government stands by workers and expects LION to honour all entitlements for all affected workers. Retrenched workers will have access to supports offered through the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations to assist in finding new employment as quickly as possible.

Free Urgent Care Clinics are now a permanent part of Medicare.

A proud moment for Northern Tasmania.

The new Launceston Veterans Hub is more than a building, it’s a community created by veterans, for veterans.

A place where support is easier to access, and no one has to navigate challenges alone.
Built with dedication, care, and service that continues beyond the uniform.

Now it’s our turn to stand beside those who have always stood for us.

Yesterday I attended the World Blood Cancer Day event in parliament and I was reminded how powerful a simple act can be.

Registering as a stem cell donor or blood donor is quick, easy, and could one day save someone’s life.

More donors mean more hope for patients and families facing blood cancer. 💙

What does success in education really look like?

For Yalmay Yunupingu, it sounds simple, but is often hard to accomplish: “A child feeling proud and confident is success.”

Having taught for 14 years, I’ve worked alongside some incredible teachers, and I had the privilege of watching Yalmay teach many years ago. She is a life member of the AEU and one of the strongest advocates for public schools and education I’ve ever met.

Her words are a powerful reminder that great education is about more than results on paper. It is about helping young people feel confident, capable and proud of who they are.

I’m proud to be part of a government committed to supporting lifelong learning and strong public education.

If you need a smile, a laugh, or maybe even a happy tear, I encourage you to watch Class Acts and hear Yalmay’s story, along with the stories of extraordinary teachers from across Australia at www.classacts.tv.

Hands up if you’re a proud product of public education! 🙋‍♀️

Punchbowl Primary School.
Queechy High School.
Newstead College.

My public education gave me the skills to go on to university, and my exceptional teachers inspired me to follow the same path.

I’m proud to be part of a government committed to supporting lifelong learning and strengthening public education for the next generation.

Happy National Public Education Day, Australia.

Public education shaped me, I’ve taught in it, and I’m proud of it!

After months of uncertainty, there’s been an encouraging development for Liberty Bell Bay.

Administrators have now identified a preferred bidder, marking an important step in the process towards new ownership.

The Australian and Tasmanian Governments have also stepped in to provide a further $5 million in short-term support to keep the workforce in place while negotiations continue.

This means we’re a step closer to a sale and a more secure future for this critical site, Australia’s only manganese smelter and a key part of Northern Tasmania’s economy.

Keeping the workforce together now helps preserve the skills and capability at the site while the sale process continues and supports a smoother transition should an agreement be reached.

This is welcome news for workers, their families and the broader community, who have been waiting for greater certainty about the future of the site.
