From Refugee to Role Model, Meet Jean Assumani.

At just 21 years of age, Jean Assumani is already making a meaningful impact in the lives of young people across Cairns 🌟🌟🌟

Born in Rwanda, Jean arrived in Australia as a refugee and settled in Cairns, where he embraced every opportunity to build a bright future. Between 2019 and 2022, he attended Trinity Bay State High School, where he quickly became known for his positive attitude, determination and willingness to help others 🌍

In 2021, we got the opportunity to connect with Jean through the Cairns Safer Streets SPAYC Cadet Project, developing valuable leadership skills and career industry exposure that would help play a role in shaping future pathways.

Today, Jean is employed as a Teacher Aide at Cairns West State School, where he plays an important role supporting students and families. Using his own lived experience, Jean assists with translation and helps young people integrate into the school environment, making transitions easier 💫 His work is more than just a job, it is an opportunity to give back to his community.

Jean’s journey is a powerful example of resilience, determination and impactful contributions within our communities. From arriving in Australia as a young refugee, to now supporting the next gens of CWSS, Jean continues to inspire those around him.

It is incredibly inspiring to see Jean striving for success, and using his experiences to create opportunities for others. His story serves as a reminder that with hard work, perseverance and support, great things are possible 🔆🔆🔆

HM Director Marc Harbrow dropping into 4K1G Radio Station Townsville 🎙️

What a visit to 4K1G Radio Station Townsville! It was a completely unplanned, “make it up as you go” kind of visit, but, it seems like it may have worked 🫣

A huge shout out to the incredible Arika Appleby - Radio host 107.1, who has absolutely mastered the art of “figure it out as you go while I put you on the spot!” She made for a deadly yarn, and before we knew it, we were deep in conversation about Youth Development, Community Events, Indigenous Business, and the exciting things happening right across Townsville.

It was also a great opportunity to share the story behind the annual Cairns NAIDOC Edor Carnival, happening next Wednesday down at North Cairns Tigers oval. If you’re a Townsville family planning to be in Cairns, we’d love to see you come along and be part of this fantastic community event 🏃🏽‍♀️ 🏃🏽‍♂️

And who knows… why can’t there be an Edor Carnival in Townsville in 2027? Every great idea starts with a conversation.

A big thank you to Arika Appleby at 4K1G Townsville for the opportunity to jump on air, have a yarn, and share the work we’re all so passionate about. Looking forward to the next visit 💫

This visit was enabled by Aspire Cairns Community Limited. Pathways

Last night, Mob Made Media & Communications Agency’s Talicia Minniecon delivered a highly informative and engaging workshop, sharing valuable insights into the ever-evolving world of social media and marketing.

Business owners based within the Cairns region were given the opportunity to get hands-on with a range of gadgets and tools designed to elevate their online presence, strengthen their branding, and enhance the way they present themselves in the digital space. While the session was fun, interactive, and full of energy, Talicia also shared personal reflections from her own journey, experiences that have helped shape her expertise and establish her as a leader not only in the communications and marketing space, but in her community.

The workshop explored both the opportunities and challenges that come with navigating the online world. Talicia highlighted practical strategies for utilising social media platforms effectively, growing business visibility, and connecting with broader networks, while also encouraging participants to be mindful of the less positive aspects of the digital landscape.

A huge thank you to Talicia for delivering such an outstanding workshop. Your knowledge, authenticity, and willingness to share your experiences made for a powerful and informative session that left attendees inspired and better equipped to strengthen their digital presence.

🥘🥘 Fuel & Burn Program 🏃🏽‍♀️ 🏃🏽‍♂️

This week, students from Pormpuraaw State School rolled up their sleeves and got hands-on in our Fuel & Burn Program. A very fun, practical initiative combining nutrition, exercise and education.

Created by Harbrow Mentoring in 2017, Fuel & Burn is designed to teach the importance of fuelling both the body and mind with nutritious, affordable foods that complement an active lifestyle. The program places a strong focus on working with ingredients that are readily available and accessible within communities.

Delivered by Health Specialist and renowned athlete Tatiana Marinho alongside HM Director Marc Harbrow, this week’s session's challenged fantastic class groups grade 3 through to grade 6, to become nutrition champions while being super active.

On today’s menu:
🌯 Kangaroo burritos
🍛 Chicken curry with rice
🥤 Fresh fruit smoothies
🫓 Fried flatbread made with flour and yoghurt

The students were outstanding, demonstrating confidence, teamwork and impressive kitchen skills before heading outdoors to burn off all that delicious food through fun physical activity.

Fuel & Burn is proudly funded by Pormpuraaw Aboriginal Shire Council through the Queensland Government’s Health & Wellbeing initiative and is available for children, young people and adults across the community.

A huge thank you to Pormpuraaw State School for welcoming our team and providing the opportunity to work alongside such enthusiastic and engaged students.

The annual Cairns Edor Carnival 🏃🏽‍♀️ 🏃🏽‍♂️

A proud initiative designed and created by Harbrow Mentoring and Our Future Mentors. The Cairns Edor Carnival was ignited in 2022, and has continued to grow each year into one of the most anticipated events for young people and families across Far North Queensland 🔆🔆🔆

Edor, a fun running and tagging game that has been played throughout Far North Queensland for centuries, is much more than a game. It brings children, families and communities together while celebrating culture, connection, teamwork whilst having a whole heap of FUN.

Over the years, the Carnival has developed into a platform for strong partnerships, exciting collaborations and investment by community organisations who come together to support an amazing annual event tailored for our young people.

A huge thank you to Cairns Regional Council for their ongoing support of the Cairns Edor Carnival. We also extend our sincere appreciation to our annual sponsors, Gold Coast Suns and Kylie Young Consultancy, whose commitment helps make this event possible.

We are excited to announce and welcome Aspire Cairns Community Limited as new sponsor and event facilitation support. Thank you for jumping on board and becoming part of the Edor Carnival journey.
