Friday Flashback
Did you or someone you know work with a pit pony?

The horses pictured here hold a special place in our country's mining history. Wharrier and Mr Ed, as they were affectionately known, were Australia's last two working pit ponies working at the Collinsville mine in Central Queensland, hauling containers of coal to the surface.
When management decided to retire the ponies, the union signed them up as members so they couldn’t be ‘sacked’ and likely to be sent off to the knackery. This gave Wharrier and Mr Ed two more years of work before an agreement was reached to retire them to a local property in 1991, where they lived for another 8 and 10 years respectively. The ponies enjoyed their final days in green pastures, with many visits from their work mates.

The train loadout facility at our CHPP is really taking shape!

For those who don't know, the train loadout (TLO) facility is system designed to load coal product coming out of the Carmichael Mine onto the trains, as safely and efficiently as possible.

The loading system consists of a silo or a large volume surge bin located over the train tracks, and as the train's wagons pass underneath the system, the chute is opened and the correct amount of coal is loaded in each wagon.

In a major step towards safer and more sustainable underground mining, BHP Group and Mitsubishi Corporation will deploy electric pickup trucks and fast-charging units to transport workers at Queensland's Broadmeadow coal mine, located 34km north of Moranbah.
This technology could aid the challenging task of cutting the sector's greenhouse gas emissions, as other mine sites begin to test out options to replace their vast diesel-powered fleets, including pickups and excavators, with zero-emissions alternatives.
