Over the next few days, key buildings and landmarks across Tasmania will be lit up in orange to mark our 50th anniversary.

This milestone is an opportunity to recognise the dedication of our volunteers who have been supporting communities in times of need for five decades. From storms and floods to search support and community education, SES members have been there when it matters most.

Keep a look out for the orange lights, take a moment to reflect on the contribution of SES volunteers, and help us celebrate 50 years of service to Tasmania.

Today, as we mark 50 years of the Tasmania State Emergency Service, we are proud to launch our 50th anniversary book, capturing the people, moments, and milestones that have shaped our story.

From our early Civil Defence beginnings through to the SES we know today, the book reflects the commitment, resilience, and community spirit that defines SES - past, present, and future through personal stories, reflections and interviews.

As conditions change, your driving should too.
In windy conditions, adjust your speed, and leave more space between you and the car in front.

Police have received reports of water on the roads in the St Helens area, including the Tasman Highway and Atlas Drive.

Motorists are urged to:
• Slow down and drive with caution
• Put your headlights on
• Look out for hazards on the roads, and
• Never drive through a flooded road.

Tasmania SES has issued a Storm Advice for the Furneaux Islands, North East and East Coast Forecast Districts.

The Bureau of Meteorology are forecasting heavy rainfall which may lead to Flash Flooding for parts of North East and East Coast Tasmania from early tomorrow (Wednesday, 27 May) morning.

Tasmania SES is ready to respond if needed, but we ask the public to be prepared and stay informed.

Be prepared:
• Supervise children closely.
• Beware of hazardous driving conditions.
• Never drive, walk or ride through flood waters.
• Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings.
• Manage pets and livestock.

It’s National Volunteer Week and we’re saying thank you to all our Tasmania SES volunteers who assist us and the community.

Our Sorell SES Unit has had a busy year responding to storm events, assisting with road crash rescue support, and providing general emergency assistance in their local community.

They’ve also been out and about in the community, running and attending community events, visiting schools, and taking part in training exercises that strengthen how they work together when it matters most.

The unit has now celebrated three years since their establishment, and in that time, they’ve grown into a capable and reliable team, guided by unit managers with strong leadership, fresh direction and a positive culture.

The volunteers have consistently stepped up to support others, balancing commitments, with reliability and dedication and a shared aim of making a meaningful difference in people’s lives. Their presence in the community provides reassurance that there is a capable and trained team ready to assist when emergencies unfold.

If you’re considering joining Tasmania SES, the members absolutely encourage you to take the step. They say that volunteering with SES is incredibly rewarding and that you gain practical skills, build confidence, and form strong friendships with like-minded people. They say it gives you a real sense of purpose, knowing you’re making a difference when people need it most.

Updated @ 3.50pm:

Police are at the scene of a single truck crash on Woodsdale Road at Runnymede, just past the fire station.

A trailer which was being towed by the truck flipped, and a quantity of diesel has leaked onto the roadway.

Woodsdale Road is currently closed at Tasman Highway and Cutting Crass Road.

Motorists are asked to divert through Buckland until the scene is cleared.

No injuries have been reported.
