Councillor Kevin Lam - City of Fairfield

Councillor Kevin Lam - City of Fairfield Empower, Inspire & Integrity. Deputy Mayor for Fairfield Council. Running for local office has never been part of my life plan.

My name is Kevin Lam and I'm honoured and grateful to be elected as Councillor for the City of Fairfield. The City of Fairfield is one of the most diverse LGA in NSW, comprising an area of 102 km2 and has a population of over 210,000 residents. However, being a child of first-generation Vietnamese immigrants who escaped war-torn Vietnam in the late 1980s, I witnessed the adversity my parents endur

ed throughout my upbringing. My father worked endless hours at a low paying factory job saving every penny to be able to put food on the table, with just enough for my twin brother and I to participate in recreational sport and education. While struggling to grasp the English language and navigate through the Australian culture, my mother ensured that my siblings and I were well supported to thrive in Fairfield City. Despite my parent’s sacrifice and hardships, my parents never forgot to remind us how lucky we are to living in this city. Their teachings fuelled my determination to not just make a living but step it up to make a difference. My parents made Mount Pritchard our home in the early 1990s. I attended Mount Pritchard East Public School and completed my Higher School Certificate at St Johns Park High School in 2010. During university, my early working career involved being a crew member at Lansvale McDonalds, a retail assistant at Horsley Park IGA and a barista but always worked a second job relating to my career. My hobbies and interests include soccer, running, motorcycling, travelling and spending time with family. In 2016, I graduated from University of New South Wales with a Bachelor’s Degree in City Planning. I’ve worked as a Town Planner and Development Manager for local and state government organisations in the past 10 years. Despite working, I’ve never forgotten my roots and knew that my educational background, skills acquired through my work, the diverse conversations with locals and my understanding of the local community needs’ could re-shape and enrich our community. This is why I had my first attempt to become City of Fairfield’s Councillor at the age of 22 in 2016 and again in 2021 where I was successful. Now as a Councillor, I look forward to contributing to the growth and development of our city, rebuilding our city landscapes, championing projects that will support youths, create infrastructure to assist our community and promote the richness of our beautiful city. Importantly, I hope to also inspire others (youth in particular) to make valuable contributions beyond their professional career as a manner of honouring our parents and the generation before us.

On Sunday, I had the privilege of representing Mayor of Fairfield Frank Carbone at the Annual Lunar New Year and Blessing Ceremony at Freedom Plaza.

Thanks to the Australian Chinese Buddhist Society and the Chinese Associations of Western Sydney for the invitation and allowing me to share a few words. It was my first public address at Freedom Plaza.

Standing where I once walked as a young boy, I shared my journey from my recent travels through China to the deep gratitude I hold for my parents’ journey. As we celebrate the Year of the Horse and take part in the blessing proceedings, it’s also a moment for self‑reflection and honouring our families.

Incredible day at Council’s Lunar New Year Celebrations🧧✨

It was also a pleasure to join ABC Radio with Mayor of Fairfield Frank Carbone for an interview to talk about the importance of this celebration to our community.

I had the absolute thrill of lighting the firecrackers to kick off the celebrations🐎 🧨

Yesterday with Mayor of Fairfield Frank Carbone, we took part in the Lunar New Year celebrations with the CASS Care Vietnamese Cabramatta Senior Group! 🧧✨

As someone of Vietnamese heritage, it was an honor to join our seniors to commemorate such a cherished occasion. From the incredible traditional dancing by VietAus Cultural Exchange Organisation - VACEO to the joy of handing out red envelopes.

Wishing everyone a prosperous and healthy Year of the Horse as we head into a month of celebrations! 🐎

The teacher who changed my life — Mrs Donna Cooper

Today, after 28 years of teaching at St Johns Park High School, Mrs Cooper officially retires, and I had the chance to surprise her.

I’ve been fortunate to have many people come into my life offering support and encouragement toward my goals. But Mrs Cooper was the very first back in my senior high school days — who saw something in me that I couldn’t yet see in myself. She became a beacon of hope, sparking my sense of purpose and momentum that has ultimately shaped the path I’m on today.

Thank you for the impact, the memories, and the lives you’ve touched — mine, the Class of 2010, and every student you’ve taught. 🙏

Last Friday evening, The Canleys officially launched in style with festivities, performances and fireworks.🥳

Canley Vale and Canley Heights is now a designated Special Entertainment Precinct, allowing business and activities to flourish later through the night.

Thanks to NSW Government, Canley Heights Nights Association, Canley Vale Little Asia Association, incredible Council staff and many others involved in making this possible. Well done.

On Saturday morning, I was delighted to be part of the official opening of Tina & Po Cafe in Canley Vale with Mayor Frank Carbone and Federal MP Dai Le.

“Po Cafe” began in the iconic Café Apartments in Vietnam and has since expanded to four more locations across the country. Building on that success and staying true to its authentic beginnings, Michael and his wife Tina decided to bring the brand to Sydney, blending it with Cabramatta’s An Nhien Vegetarian restaurant (Michael's mum as well!).

A big shout-out as well to the Yun Yee Tong Dragon & Lion Dance team for continually supporting and performing at so many openings.

Big thanks to the Mounties juniors for letting me have a few shots on goal! ⚽️

The other week had an awesome time unveiling the brand-new synthetic fields at Endeavour Sports field and Fairfield City’s Wall of Football Champions which celebrated the amazing players and coaches who’ve represented Australia and proudly came from Fairfield City! These includes players like Harry Kewell, Paul Okon and Tony Popovic.

This initiative was proudly funded by the NSW Government and Fairfield City Council.
