Have you heard this statement online? “You’re safe from a bushfire as long as there isn’t bush directly next to your property to be at risk during a bush fire” That statement is incorrect.

You don’t need to have bush directly next to your property to be at risk during a bush fire. Embers can travel long distances quickly and start a fire. Recent wet weather has encouraged bush growth and made it harder to manage. Even if you can’t see the bush make sure you stay well prepared before and during the bush fire danger period. Yesterday, our brigade was on duty at the Cumberland Fire Control Centre (Western Sydney North Fire Control Centre). Adverse weather conditions saw the first Total Fire Ban and Extreme Fire Danger rating of the season issued for our region. Between 10 am and 10 pm, our district responded to approximately 80 incidents. The most noticeable incidents were a significant structure fire in Leppington requiring the activation of our Operational Command Vehicle (OCV), and a major storm event that brought down trees across power lines and roads. The storm-related calls were the majority of the day’s incidents, resulting in the OCV being activated for a second time and a forward command being established in Londonderry to manage the high volume of incidents in the area.

Yesterday was a timely reminder that we are heading into the Bush Fire Danger Period on 1 October, and that the storm season is already underway. Now is the time to prepare yourself and your home. To prepare now and understand the risks you may face during the upcoming fire season, visit:

Did you know that bush fires can occur quickly and without warning?
Before you travel, make sure you have checked the conditions and have a plan in place if things change. Let people know your movements and if it’s not safe, avoid travelling altogether. Always keep an eye out for emergency vehicles and if you see a fire call triple Zero (000).

A Total Fire Ban will be in place tomorrow, Saturday 5 September for the Greater Sydney Region, with Extreme fire danger forecast.

Warm, dry and windy conditions are forecast across parts of the state, with much of northeast NSW experiencing High fire danger.

Take action now. Know your fire risk and what you will do if fire threatens. Remember to report all unattended fires to Triple Zero (000).
