Tonight, we voted on the council’s new budget, which includes a 2.75% rate rise. I will never support a rate rise, particularly at a time when our community is already doing it tough. The vote was 7-1. I have attached my speech from tonight’s council meeting.

Today, I’m here before you not only as a voice for myself, but for so many in our community who are facing unprecedented hardship. The reality is undeniable, we are struggling. Businesses that once thrived have shut their doors, and families across our region are feeling the crushing weight of rising unemployment and a faltering economy.

Some households are experiencing circumstances even more dire than those of this council. For many, the threat of a rate increase is not just a matter of inconvenience, it is a challenge to their very survival. I know this because I am one of them. Recently, I lost my job, and I have felt firsthand the uncertainty and stress that comes with not knowing how you will provide for those you love.

The cost of essential items like fuel has soared, making daily life more difficult and expensive. A 2.75% rate increase might not mean much to some, but for a family already doing it tough, that could be the difference between putting food on the table or going without. 38% of families in the Wellington Shire Council are earning less than $880 per week. For that reason, I cannot support a rate increase in this budget.

It is important that we support each other during these challenging times. Placing an emphasis on compassion rather than additional financial pressures will be beneficial. Many households are experiencing reduced incomes, and the prospect of further rate increases presents significant challenges for those already facing financial difficulties.

Alternative approaches, such as implementing budget reductions or deferring non-essential projects, can be considered to manage council finances without increasing the burden on residents. Opting not to raise rates reflects a thoughtful approach and reinforces the council's dedication to maintaining community trust and cohesion.

I understand the immense challenges the council is facing as it works hard to remain financially viable in a time of rising costs and economic uncertainty. I want to acknowledge the enormous effort of our council staff, who work tirelessly behind the scenes to keep services running, budgets balanced, and this organisation moving forward. Their hard work, professionalism, and commitment to finding savings, improving efficiency, and making difficult decisions deserve real recognition. I know this is not easy, and I genuinely appreciate how hard the council and its staff are working to protect the long-term financial future of our community.

Your dedication to keeping the finances in order, despite few choices and intense stress, is appreciated. We have the ability to get through these challenges if we support one another and let compassion steer our actions.

Thank you.
