“The time has come…”

This is the famous, and well-remembered, line from the poem 'The Walrus and the Carpenter' by Lewis Carroll (1832–1898). It is also a powerful Lyric from 'Beds Are Burning' by Midnight Oil. It is these same few words that we too now utter as we say “Thank you, Farewell and Adieu” to all who have supported Ripley Sewing Centre over these past years. At the conclusion of your reading the above words our doors will be closed for the last time.

Sorry We’re Closed – Please don’t let this become the fate of more small businesses!

Earlier this month we received an email from Gary and Sylvia of Alisellou Sewing Centre at Wooroolin. Qld. 4608. We wish to share a couple of statements made in that email as they resonate with s-e-w many of us who operate as a small concern:

Black Friday - "To buy or not to buy?"

For those of us who can remember “Once upon a time” it was December when retail sales skyrocketed thanks to the Christmas and Boxing Day sales. Now however, it seems November has swiftly stolen the shopping limelight.

Whilst the concept may have originated in the US the Black Friday sales have now spread like wildfire around the world including here in Australia. It’s all due to the Black Friday (November 24) and Cyber Monday (November 27) sales that offer the kind of deals that get bargain hunters excited.

In Australia, the term is somewhat controversial, as prior to its popularization as a shopping day, it referred not to shopping at all, but to the devastating Black Friday bushfires that occurred in Victoria 1938–39. From December 1938 to January 1939, fires burnt out around two million hectares. 71 people died and more than 650 buildings were destroyed. The most severe fires came during a firestorm on Friday January 13, known as Black Friday.

S-E-W in the spirit of remembrance that we paused and reflected upon on Saturday (11/11) we also remember those affected by the many fires spread around Queensland commencing with the Darling Downs fires that began on 23 October 2023.

A couple of weeks ago, as noted in an earlier chat, many of our participants in the RSC Quilt Challenge 2023 gathered, presented their quilt top creation, shared their learning and challenges whilst enjoying a special High Tea to celebrate this conclusion of this chapter in their patchwork hobby journey.

Unbeknown to them, walking beside them on their journey was also an accomplished Queensland, Australian and International Quilt show winner. Today we forwarded their words of encouragement and reflections to each of our Quilt Challenge participants respectively.

Again, we say congratulations to all and ask that you remember the following: Capability and individual expression are not qualities that just OTHER people possess. YOU have it too! As seen through participating in this challenge you let yours happen and realized there are no boundaries to your unique expression. In the words of song writers Coco Jones and Tyler James Williams “Let It Shine”.

Hi All,

Congratulations to all who, over the past 9 months, have participated in the Ripley Sewing Centre Quilt Challenge. On Saturday 21St October our participants gathered, presented their quilt top creation, shared their learning and challenges whilst enjoying a special High Tea to celebrate this conclusion of this chapter in their patchwork hobby journey. Attached are photos of a selection of participants. They will absolutely amaze you especially when you think these results revolved around 9 words and pieces of fabric, they had not involvement in choosing. Well Done!!!

Each participant received a gift which included some “Matilda’s Own” 100% Cotton Wadding , Special Bird Purse Scissors and a “Twirl “Charm Pack by Sarah Watts for Moda. We finished the morning with a presentation by Trish about her own quilting journey as she moves from using a domestic machine only to recently expanding to include her new longarm machine - HQ Amara ST. Trish’s presentation was both verbal and practical. Some participants accepted the challenge to have a go and did sew with great results. Fantastic time was had by all.

Only six (Sunday 15.10.23) sleeps to go...and we come together and celebrate reaching the finish line of the RSC Quilt Challenge 2023. Here at RSC we have been creative with fun awards and gift packs for when we meet on Saturday 21st October at 9am.

Before then we wish to share some of the interpretations for the word HOME which was the theme for Block Nine.

Just can't wait to see all the blocks formed in to the finished quilt top. Whilst some will have stitched all their blocks together others, we know, are looking forward to gaining the insight of their fellow participants before they achieve this.
