Yoda has decided to surprise me today! He’s now standing and walking for a minute or so at a time.

He’s improved faster than I expected him to. Here he is enjoying his breakfast, anchovies filled with Wombaroo Insectivore. Yoda has transitioned away from tube feeding and has spent the last 2 days being hand fed like this. At the end, you can see how Yoda tells me he’s full, he’ll drop the anchovy onto the ground in front of him.

Little Yoda is quickly improving.

He’s been receiving fluids and wombaroo insectivore via tube. Today he’s started getting noisy and is sounding more like a normal seagull.

This afternoon Yoda has tried to stand and was able to support himself on the backs of his legs, not quite able to stand on his feet but he’s definitely got the willpower.

Today I’ve started to offer him some fish to see if he is able to feed himself.

🔔Wildlife Notice🔔

Some of you may have seen this post from Rosie this morning, I’ve picked up the seagull and it appears to be a case of avian botulism.

Please keep an eye out for our local wildlife, we may see an increase in cases like this in the following months.

🪿What is botulism?🦆

Avian botulism is a disease caused by bacteria, it is often spread by birds eating infected carcasses or maggots on the shore. Avian botulism is NOT contagious to humans but regardless you should alwasy wear gloves when handling wildlife. Avian botulism is common in summer and autumn due to high temperatures.

🦢 What does it look like? 🦢

• Waterbirds and Seabirds unable to fly or walk.

• Can have their heads held up or flopped down.

• Birds may appear to be paralysed, partially or fully.

• Common in ducks, swans and other water/sea birds like this Silver Gull.

Short and sweet, as the best releases are 🩷

Lachie (friend, fellow KoRI volunteer and just all around good guy 🤣) found little Jeff the Swallow yesterday on the road, stunned, being harassed by Miner birds and far too close to being run over by a car.

Today Lachie got to let little Jeff go, he flew off immediately, within a few minutes his friends started flying around with him (in quiet celebration I imagine!)

Pickles, a juvenile Crimson Rosella who came into care three weeks ago was finally able to be released yesterday.

Pickles had a very harsh collision with a window and caused some extensive internal damage. Although we all wish we had X-ray vision we can only guess injuries to the best of our abilities, by the symptoms the animals show. I believe Pickles had either fractured her pelvis or had nerve damage.

For the first day Pickles was unable to move her legs, by the second day she was able to move one, by the third day she was able to move both. It took her three weeks of cage rest and then exercise in the outdoor aviary to rework her flight muscles. Pickles was cleared for release when she was able to fly and land as a normal bird should.

Needing name suggestions for this one!

The tiniest bird! This little Welcome Swallow was being harassed by the very territorial Noisy Miner’s here by the Raymond Island Ferry.

Luckily on assessment I found no broken bones, but an interesting old injury- this bird is missing the top half of its beak as you can see below. The bird is in great body condition so it is clearly able to eat normally and is due for release today. This little guy most likely hit something and gave himself a concussion, the Miner birds having found him after he was unable to fly.

Miners, although very territorial, don’t usually cause severe damage unlike some other territorial bird species such as the Australian Magpie.

Welcome Swallows are not a very common species to come into care, they are so fast and agile that they are not an easy target for predators.

🐦‍🔥 Phoenix 🐦‍🔥

Little Phoenix was orphaned in Paynesville for unknown reasons. He’s very lucky to have been found by the very kind Lana, who kept him well hydrated and tried her best to reunite him with his mumma. He will stay with me temporarily for his initial treatment and then go to another amazing carer to be buddied up with her Brushtail joey of similar size and age. Phoenix is just under 300g and has a lot of growing to go!

A big day for Honey! This week Honey, the sweetest little Ringtail Possum was released.

Honey has been in care since October 2025 after being orphaned for unknown reasons. She has grown up into a strong and capable young possum lady!

My dear Bilbo has injured his wing, adjusting to the wild world can be hard for new babies. He’s come inside for some cage rest, where I’ll monitor him for any improvement.

The other 4 hobbits are doing well, I’ve sighted them several times flying between the local trees, all buddied up together.

Tomorrow morning 7:40AM I’ll be chatting to the hosts on the ABC Gippsland radio station.

We’ll be talking about the underrated blue tongue lizard, one of our most interesting yet most overlooked animals here in Australia. A sad experience of losing 15 blue tongue lizard lives yesterday had the surprising positive impact, of teaching thousands of people how unique these lizards truely are.
