CAHS treats children from around Western Australia, and is committed to programs that promote lifelong health in children and adolescents. Our health service is made up of Neonatology, Community Health, Mental Health and Perth Children’s Hospital. CAHS employs over 4,000 people and provides services throughout the community within metropolitan Perth; operating the State’s only dedicated tertiary p

aediatric hospital (Perth Children’s Hospital); providing specialised state wide services; as well as providing support to other hospitals and health services for children and adolescents across Western Australia.

Influenza is still circulating across WA, making flu vaccination as important as ever.

It’s still not too late to get your flu vaccination and help protect yourself and your family.

Free flu vaccinations are available for all the family at the Stan Perron Centre based at Perth Children’s Hospital (PCH).

The Stan Perron Centre is located on level 2 at PCH. Opening hours Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:00pm. Last vaccination: 3:45pm. Walk ins welcome.

Eligibility based vaccinations are also available at Child and Adolescent Community Health (CACH) clinics. Bookings are recommended. To check your eligibility and book your appointment see here: https://cahs.health.wa.gov.au/Our-services/Community-Health/Immunisation/Register-for-an-appointment

Congratulations to the winners of the 2026 CAHS Annual Excellence Awards!

The Child and Adolescent Health Service (CAHS) Annual Excellence Awards recognise the outstanding people and teams whose dedication and service help ensure the care and experience of children, young people and families remain at the heart of everything we do.

Selected from a competitive field of 44 exceptional finalists, 16 staff members, volunteers and teams were honoured for their significant contributions to supporting the health and wellbeing of children, young people and families across Western Australia.

The awards celebrated excellence in clinical care, leadership, research, innovation, teamwork and service delivery, showcasing the remarkable talent, expertise and commitment that exists across CAHS.

This Father's Day, we celebrate the dads, father figures and carers whose love and support help children through life's biggest challenges.

For some families, Father's Day will be spent together at home. For others, like Ian and his 11-year-old son Murray, it will be spent in hospital.

No matter where the day is spent, the role of a father can make a world of difference.

To all the fathers, grandfathers, father figures and caregivers in our community, thank you. We see the care you give, the sacrifices you make and the strength you show every day.

We also hold in our thoughts the fathers and families for whom this day may be difficult.

We're thinking of you this Father's Day and wishing you special moments with the people who matter most.

After 98 days in the neonatal unit, baby Leah is finally heading home.

Born at just 27 weeks gestation and weighing only 680 grams, Leah spent her first few months growing stronger with the support of her family and the dedicated team caring for her. On the day of her discharge, Leah weighed 2.6 kilograms and was ready to begin the next chapter at home.

Like many babies born this early, Leah's journey included respiratory support and establishing feeding before she was ready to leave hospital.

To mark the occasion, Leah's parents, Kelly and Peter, surprised staff with a beautiful cake and special treats as a heartfelt thank you for the care their daughter and family received throughout their stay.

Adding an extra special connection, Leah's grandmother is a retired nurse who once worked in our Neonatal Unit at King Edward Memorial Hospital.

Congratulations to Leah and her family on this wonderful milestone. We wish you all the very best as you settle in at home and create many happy memories together.

Harper was diagnosed with a progressive hearing loss as a baby, and from an early age, accessing sound was a challenge. Before receiving her first cochlear implant, she had significant difficulty hearing and communicating, and she wasn't yet using spoken language.

Since receiving her first cochlear implant in 2024 and her second in 2026, Harper has made incredible progress.

Working closely with her speech pathologist, Jade, and supported every step of the way by her parents, Harper has gradually built her listening, speech and language skills. Through regular therapy, consistent use of her hearing devices and plenty of hard work, she has gone from having very limited communication to using short sentences, engaging in conversations and connecting more confidently with the people around her.

One of the most wonderful parts of Harper's journey has been watching her confidence grow. Her social communication skills have flourished, and she is now making the most of every opportunity to listen, learn and communicate.

This Speech Pathology Week, we're celebrating children like Harper and the families who walk alongside them. They remind us just how many possibilities communications creates.

Meet Oakley, a happy and determined 22-month-old on an incredible listening and communication journey.

Oakley has a bilateral hearing loss due to congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV). He wears a hearing aid in his right ear and received a left cochlear implant in January 2026.

Since then, he has been working closely with our Speech Pathology team through intensive habilitation, learning to listen through his cochlear implant and helping his brain make sense of new sounds.

This Speech Pathology Week, we're proud to support children like Oakley and their families as they build communication skills and confidence for the future.

Celebrating National Book Week with our smallest readers.

The Neonatology Unit at King Edward Memorial Hospital is taking part in Life's Little Treasures Read-A-Thon, highlighting the important role reading plays from the very beginning of life.

Reading to babies from birth supports brain, language and cognitive development, while introducing them to words, sounds and the rhythm of speech. It is also a valuable way for parents and caregivers to bond with their baby, helping them feel safe, secure and comforted through the sound of a familiar voice.

To mark the occasion, Neonatology staff dressed as their favourite book characters to encourage families and promote the benefits of reading within the unit.

At just seven years old, Alec has shown incredible resilience.

In November 2024, Alec became critically unwell with pneumococcal disease. The illness resulted in profound hearing loss in both ears. For six months, Alec had no access to sound, dramatically impacting his ability to communicate and participate in everyday life.

During this challenging time, Alec and his family used a whiteboard and marker and speech-to-text technology apps (NALscribe) while awaiting cochlear implant surgery. Thankfully, Alec's proficient reading skills enabled this method of communication.

Alec received his two cochlear implant surgeries in 2025. Since then, he has worked alongside his speech pathologist, Jade, to help his brain learn to interpret and make sense of sound again.

Through regular speech pathology sessions, Alec has made significant progress. Today, his speech and language skills are developing age-appropriately, he no longer relies on alternative communication supports, and he is thriving with access to spoken language.

Being able to hear and communicate again has opened the door to reconnecting with friends, learning at school, expressing himself, and enjoying the sounds of everyday life.

We are so proud of Alec’s incredible growth and perseverance, he is a truly inspirational and remarkable young boy.

This Speech Pathology Week, we celebrate children like Alec and recognise the life-changing role speech pathologists play in helping people communicate, participate and reach their full potential.

When Elvie Yap became a mother, her world shifted in ways she never expected.

Once firmly career-focused, she found herself immersed in 20 months of full-time parenting in a culture vastly different from where she grew up in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

This personal journey laid the foundation for her current work as a Child and Adolescent Health Service (CAHS) Community Ambassador.

“As an Ambassador, I have the opportunity to better understand the services available and to help other parents from culturally diverse backgrounds access support and reliable information,” Elvie said.

“Every family deserves to feel confident navigating the health system.”

“I hope my role will help break down barriers and empower parents, helping families to thrive.”

A special welcome from the Minister for Health.

A new cohort of graduate nurses has taken the first step in their careers with the Child and Adolescent Health Service (CAHS), receiving a warm welcome from Minister for Health Hon Meredith Hammat MLA at this week's Nursing Transition to Practice Program (TTPP) orientation.

Minister Hammat thanked the graduates for choosing nursing and shared words of encouragement as they take their first steps into caring for Western Australia's children, young people and families.

The cohort includes graduate nurses joining CAHS across Perth Children's Hospital and Neonatology and Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services.

We look forward to supporting these talented nurses as they learn, grow and make a difference for our patients and families.

Music filled Perth Children's Hospital this week as musicians from the West Australian Symphony Orchestra (WASO) paid a special visit to our patients, families and staff.

As part of the Hospital Orchestra Project, organised through the School of Special Educational Needs: Medical and Mental Health, WASO musicians visited wards throughout the hospital, sharing the joy of live music with children and their loved ones. A quartet also performed in the Atrium, creating a wonderful atmosphere for everyone to enjoy.

Adding to the fun, our fantastic Clown Doctors Australia joined in the performance, dancing alongside children and families and bringing plenty of laughter to the day.

A heartfelt thank you to WASO for sharing your talent and helping create such special moments for our patients and families.

When you're in hospital, something as simple as choosing what to eat and when to eat it can make a big difference.

One year ago, Perth Children’s Hospital launched Meals on Demand, giving patients and families the flexibility to order meals when hunger strikes.

The service was co-designed alongside consumers and offers more menu options that cater to a broad range of nutritional, dietary and cultural preferences.

The results speak for themselves: 85% of families prefer the new model, 92% of patients enjoy their meals, and we've reduced food waste by 25%!

Supported by our dedicated Food Services team, Meals on Demand is helping create a more personalised hospital experience for children and their families.

Thank you to our patients, families and staff who helped make this innovative service such a success.

Nine years young and still the most popular staff member at PCH!

Our beloved support dog Winston celebrated his 9th birthday this week, and let's just say he received plenty of admiration from children, families and staff.

The birthday boy has spent years delivering comfort, companionship and countless smiles to children spending time in hospital. In return, he enjoyed a day full of pats, cuddles, belly rubs and birthday attention.

A huge thank you to neonatal nurse, volunteer and proud dog mum Emily for bringing so much joy to our hospital through one very special groodle.

Happy 9th birthday, Winnie. Thanks for being the best boy and making PCH a happier place each time you visit.
