SES Mullumbimby

SES Mullumbimby Mullumbimby Unit of the NSW State Emergency Service - helping the community in times of floods, storms and tsunami 🌧️⛈️☔️🌊 WANT TO JOIN SES?

MULLUMBIMBY SES is Byron Shire's branch of the NSW State Emergency Service – tasked to meet the emergency needs of local residents and visitors during floods and storms. Mullumbimby SES trains the first and second Monday each month from 7pm to 9.30pm. Anyone interested in joining the SES is welcome to come along and see for themselves what it's all about! (No appointment necessary but you must be

aged 16 or over). We are always looking for new members. TRAINING
We offer full training in a wide range of specialised skill sets that cover both outdoor (fieldwork) and indoor (admin) operational responses. Although we encourage members to train in a range of areas, volunteers are free to choose their own level of participation – whether that be performing a swift-water rescue or simply providing a friendly smile and hot drink to a fellow volunteer after a long, wet day in the field. HOW TO FIND US...
Our SES Headquarters is adjacent to Rural Fire Service's shed – located on the right-hand side of Coolamon Scenic Drive, less than 1km north of Mullumbimby's town centre. Cross Federation Bridge and continue 200 meters past Main Arm Road (on the left). For general information or recruitment inquiries call 1800 201 000

Sending our condolences to our friends at NSW SES Tweed Heads 🧡

Vale Wendy Bartley (1961–2026)

Today, on Wear Orange Wednesday, we honour and remember our dear friend and colleague, Wendy.

Wendy dedicated 18 years to the Tweed Heads SES Unit, serving our community with unwavering commitment and heart. Throughout her service, she undertook numerous roles including Deputy Local Commander, Administration Officer, Membership Officer, and Procurement & Operations Support. Her dedication was recognised through Long Service Awards, Premier’s Emergency Citations, and the National Medal. She was also due to receive a Commissioner’s Unit Citation—a testament to her outstanding contribution.

But beyond the titles and accolades, Wendy was the heart of our unit family. She was always there—ready for a chat, to offer advice, or simply to listen. Her kindness, warmth, and genuine care for others made a lasting impact on us all.

Today would have also been Wendy’s birthday, making this moment even more poignant. We are heartbroken and miss her deeply, yet we are incredibly proud to have served alongside such a remarkable, community-minded person.

Our love and deepest condolences go out to Wendy’s family and friends. She will forever remain a cherished part of the Tweed Heads SES family.

Here's Scarlett, one of our youngest volunteers! She is such an asset to our unit because she brings enthusiasm, curiosity and the perspective of Byron Shire's younger community. We love having you in the team Scarlett! 🧡

Today is WOW Day and we’re shining a spotlight on some incredible people like Scarlett. ⭐

Scarlett joined the NSW SES following the devastating 2022 floods that impacted Mullumbimby and much of the Northern Rivers.

“The floods were devastating – they affected everyone in some way,” she said.

“I helped wherever I could, mostly with food deliveries and getting essential items to families who needed support.”

When Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred threatened the region in March 2025, Scarlett was again on hand to help – this time proudly wearing her SES uniform.
