Not everyone wants a three bedroom house with a garden, especially if you’re busy.

A growing number of people are prioritising location over size. Do the pros of apartment living outweigh the cons?

I lost! But I’m feeling quite good about it. I got just under 20% of the vote and came in second behind the incumbent.

Considering that I’ve only been here since March, I didn’t have a big network of volunteers, I only had a tiny budget and I didn’t have the backing of a well oiled Liberal Party machine it was a pretty good showing.

A huge thank you to the volunteers I did have! Thank you!

I reckon it’s a good first run. I should be in a good position to win next time!

It’s national cycle to work day! I’m a carer so work from home, but got on my bike to go to the optometrists in town. It took me a mere 13 minutes and parked right outside

Your postal ballots should be arriving this week and next. If you need help understanding what you need to do, there’s plenty at the VEC website (www.vec.vic.gov.au). You can also visit the VEC offices at the bottom of Bridge Street Mall. Remember, voting in Australia is compulsory so make sure that you get your ballot papers back to the VEC in time.

I’m always available for a chat.

My preferences are in order on the ballot paper:

2. Mark Jones
1. Robert Pattie-Williams
3. Ben Taylor

Just like Federal and State lower house elections, you must number every box.

Normally I enjoy some delicious irony. This however, takes a particularly nauseating twist. That is the irony of a state upper house MP telling a councillor to “stay in their lane” when they have frequently strayed from “their own lane.” The video expresses it well.

I am for a local voice on any issue which concerns our community. It’s about local democracy. Where council doesn’t have jurisdiction on a particular issue, it’s still legitimate. Then it’s about reflecting it up to higher levels of government.

A public meeting about the future of the Buninyong Botanical Gardens and the Gong. This is what local democracy is about, over 25 local people expressing their voice. I learnt a lot. For instance, did you know that th Buninyong Botanical Gardens are probably one of the oldest in Victoria?

Of course are as many opinions as there are people. What is important, is that local citizens feel heard. The way the council runs its consultation process at the moment means that most feel that the council is aloof and disconnected.

What tends to happen is that the council presents a proposal as a done job and expects the community to give it the tick of approval by means of its consultation process. It’s rare that meaningful alternatives are suggested.

City of Ballarat is not unique in this, I have come across similar approaches in Casey and Yarra Ranges. This needs to change. Community consultation must present real options at an earlier stage of development.

Just part of my regular Saturday ride to get some meaningful change to the Sturt Street bike path. It’s a white elephant at the moment. No self respecting cyclist would use it because it takes far too long. At each intersection you are forced to press the beg button and wait a full cycle for the lights to change. They should be automatic just like they are for cars. I use the parallel Dana or Eyre Streets if I want to get anywhere on Sturt Street.

Write to Juliana Addison (Wendouree MP) or Michaela Settle (Eureka MP) and demand VicRoads make this simple change.

Active transport (cycling and walking) can save our city from congestion, make it nicer to drive for those who have to and improve our health.

Don’t be fooled by the car lobby. Cycling is accessible to nearly everyone. Here in Ballarat, you can even get a reconditioned one free (from the Y in Wendouree and their Recranked program).
