Logan Tapuala’s fiery tribute to Siva Afi reveals how traditional Samoan fire dance reconnected him with culture and self.

Logan Tapuala was born in Melbourne but grew up in Sāmoa where his love of Siva Afi, traditional Samoan fire dance, began.

After moving back to Australia, Siva Afi helped him to form his identity as a Samoan Australian. He hopes that through performing and teaching Siva Afi he can help others to build their confidence and discipline and feel a connection with Samoan culture.

Centering Vietnamese-Australian voices, Fluid Memories: The Waiting stands as a testament to how homeland, memory and identity come to be carried and collectively embodied.

To navigate the entanglements between personal and political histories through the lens of post-war Vietnam, Fluid Memories invites attendees to consider how inherited ideology shapes people and place.

Fluid Memories: The Waiting is a multi-media performance project created and performed by dance artist Chung Nguyen with a team of multicultural collaborators in Immigration Museum's Long Room.

📅 10am - 5pm, Saturday 19 September - audiences are invited to come and go as they please.

🎟️ Included with museum entry: https://brnw.ch/21x5jkl

Fluid Memories: The Waiting is supported by the City of Melbourne Arts Grants. Fluid Memories premiered in August at Dancehouse supported by the Australian Government through Creative Australia, its principal arts investment and advisory body. Project development has been supported by Dancehouse through the Independent Choreographers Program, Temperance Hall’s Front Studio Residency Program, and LGI/WXYZ Studios Moving Forward Residency.

Chung would like to thank Auspicious Arts Projects, Multicultural Arts Victoria, Dan Costin, Arie Rain Glorie, Renée Copraij and Priya Srinivasan.

Born in Nairobi, Kenya to South Sudanese parents, Thomas Deng spent a brief period of his childhood living in two refugee camps, before arriving in Australia at the age of six. Football became a way for Thomas to make friends, find a community and build a future for himself.

From grassroots football to professional clubs, Thomas was just 18 when he debuted with the Socceroos on the international stage. Today, he resides in Japan and plays for the Yokohama F. Marinos.

🐶 Happy International Dog Day! ❤️

More than a century ago, this loyal companion sat proudly alongside a woman - perhaps a relative or nurse - a baby, and a toddler in a garden. Taken circa 1910s, it's a reminder that our four-legged friends have long been cherished members of the family.

The identities of the family, their faithful dog, and even the location may never be known. But this photograph is a reminder that dogs have always been part of our story. 🐾
