Introducing Roxane Ingleton! Lord Mayor candidate.
I'm an Endorsed Registered Midwife currently working in the public health system. As a unionist, I have fought for fairer work conditions and advocated for essential workers who are being forced from the city due to a lack of affordable housing.
I’ve called Melbourne home these past 20 years and wouldn’t have it any other way. I currently live in North Melbourne and work in Parkville.
As a midwife, I dedicate my working life to the safe births of the next generation.
But I worry about the world they will inherit.
Climate change is a health issue. Increasing extreme weather and bushfire events directly threaten our health and daily lives.
I am passionate about public health and I’ve long campaigned for divestment from fossil fuels, for greening the healthcare industry and for human rights in healthcare.
As an active union workplace representative and a Victorian branch councillor of the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation, I fight for fair working conditions for my fellow nurses and midwives locally, and across the state. The pandemic, recession and ongoing cost of living crisis has exposed unreliable, insecure work as well as soaring housing prices across the city.
The cost of living crisis affects most Melburnians, but I know what it means to be an essential worker that struggles to affordably live near my work. Council, like all levels of government, needs to be in touch with the acute financial struggles of different parts of our community. I can tell that personal story and talk directly to the material needs of inner city residents and workers.
Rental affordability and housing diversity are in a dire state. We need abundant housing supply, but we need to do it well. We need quality and affordable homes to support healthy communities, and we need our services, infrastructure and green open space to keep pace with growth.
I love Melbourne and look forward to building a world we want to leave to the next generation, by fighting for the public interest, for public health, and for a truly affordable & sustainable Melbourne.
