Wikimedia Australia's 2026 Annual General Meeting is on Sunday 20 September, 5pm AEST (4:30pm SA/NT, 3pm WA), held online. As well as annual reports and the presentation of the Craig Franklin Award, this year's AGM includes board elections — one Ordinary Member position is open, alongside four board members standing for re-election. Nominations are open now and close Saturday 13 September, 11:59pm AEST. All welcome to attend; current members can nominate and vote. 🐨 Today is National Threatened Species Day, marking the anniversary of the death of Benjamin, the last known thylacine, in 1936.

Every species article on Wikipedia carries a small coloured bar showing its conservation status, from Least Concern to Extinct. It's used across dozens of language editions worldwide, and it was designed by a Melbourne Wikipedian, Pengo Wray. Last year, Wikimedia Australia funded Pengo to refresh the code behind Wikipedia's threatened species lists and build a dedicated Australia-specific list, keeping this information accurate as species are added, uplisted or downlisted.

If you are like Pengo and notice a gap on Wikipedia that you can fix, the WMAU Partner Projects funding round is currently open. Please get in touch and put in an application!

"Eight hours' work, eight hours' rest, eight hours' recreation". ⏱️

That was the rallying cry of Melbourne's stonemasons in 1856, when they became the first workers anywhere in the world to win the eight-hour day at industry scale. It's a huge part of Australian history — and it's still missing a lot of detail on Wikipedia.

Throughout September, Wikimedia Australia is encouraging editors to take part in WikiProject Organised Labour Month. We'll be working to expand the coverage of Australian trade union history — from the eight-hour day movement to the women who organised alongside it and are still missing from the encyclopaedia.

No experience needed. Whether it's writing a short biography, tagging a photo on Wikimedia Commons, or improving a Wikidata entry, every contribution helps tell the Australian story!

Some good news on Wikipedia's gender gap 👩‍🔬

A new study in Proceedings of the Royal Society B found that female biology professors at US universities are now more likely than their male colleagues to have a Wikipedia biography. This is a complete reversal of the pre-2018 trend, credited largely to a decade of work by WikiProject Women in Red 💃closing the gap on notable women!
