…..if you were wondering….
Why is the creek suddenly emptying out?
The answer is provided by an emergency message the KCA received from Melbourne Water today; please read below:
————————————————————————
Due to recent high rainfall, Melbourne Water is working with relevant agencies and emergency services to manage the high water levels across our network.
The Eastern Treatment Plant is now at capacity and has not been able to treat sewage to its normal standard. Excess water is now exceeding our onsite storage capacity, which is designed to handle most regular rainfall events . If the onsite storage basins reach full capacity there is a risk of localised downstream flooding. Out of courtesy, we would like to inform the local community about our planned relief measures to keep the community safe.
We will be conducting a controlled discharge of treated wastewater into Taylors Drain, adjacent to the Eastern Treatment Plant. This drain flows into Wadsleys Drain, Eel Race Drain and then to a small section of Kananook Creek and into Port Phillip Bay at Carrum Beach. This controlled discharge will minimise risks to the safe operation of Eastern Treatment Plant and will minimise the likelihood of wastewater spills into neighbouring properties. Water quality in Wadsleys Drain, Eel Race Drain, northern end of Kananook Creek and Carrum Beach will be affected and people are being advised to avoid all contact with the water.
Our crews are now on site monitoring the works and we are actively sampling and monitoring the water quality. If people have any concerns, please contact Melbourne Water’s call centre on 131 722.
Details: Controlled discharge of treated wastewater from Eastern Treatment Plant
Discharge location:– Eastern Treatment Plant, Thompson Road
Waterway impact: Taylors Drain; Wadsleys Drain, Eel Race Drain, small section of Kananook Creek
Community notifications
· As a precautionary measure, we’re putting up Melbourne Water signage along the creek, including Carrum Beach, which will advise people and their pets to avoid all contact with the water until the signage is removed.
· A community bulletin has been distributed to nearby residents in the area.
· We’ll contact key stakeholders in the area. We’ll do this via phone and email.
· Social media (targeted) to notify people in the area.
An unfortunate outcome to this planned discharge may be fish deaths between Taylors Drain and the northern end of Kananook Creek. This may be visible to the public and we will have crews onsite to monitor and assist.
A community bulletin is attached for more information or contact Melbourne Water on 131 722.
Best Regards
Melbourne Water
